Exclamation 2020 BMW M8 Competition Coupe First Test Review [Motortrend]

Whether or not if it's selling, the car is impressive AF!!! Especially in 'Competition' guise....

Yes, the M8 is heavy. Sure, M division has done a lot of hard work to make it about 160 pounds lighter than an M850i Coupe, but at 4,202 pounds, it's still a very heavy car for something with "competition" literally written across the back. A last-generation Cadillac CTS-V sedan, for comparison, weighs 100 pounds less than the M8, and like the M5 sedan, adults can sit comfortably in the back seats of the Caddy, more than can be said for the M8.

All that being said, the M8 laid down a blistering 23.3-second figure-eight lap at 0.88 average total g, plus 1.03 average lateral g in steady-state skidpad testing. To get an idea of just how impressive that is for a heavy car, consider it's quicker and grippier than the Acura NSX and BMW's own Z4 M40i. It's also a dead tie with the new C8 Corvette Z51 and only slightly less grippy. All those cars weigh hundreds of pounds less. Some of that can be attributed to the M8's massive power advantage, what with 617 hp and 553 lb-ft to move it, but getting those poor Pirelli P Zero's to hang on that hard with 2.1 tons of car and all that power thrown at them is pretty damn impressive.

She's everything he said... and then some. Spend $900 on a piggyback--and nothing more--and she's a sub-2.6s to 60 monster even in Gran Coupe form.

Have you done dragy runs after installing the piggyback?

Yes. Posted on the other thread. There's more in her yet especially on the high end but here's what I've got so far (or you can see them on the leaderboard):

It's about 2 inches longer than an F90 M5 and 100Ibs heavier so these are close to what I was expecting. I'm expecting at least a tenth or two better in the 1/4 mile once I've got JB4's map 6 dialed in for this particular engine (every single one of them behaves a little differently it seems).

I've also been traction-bound with the gobshite Pirellis that it came with. I put Pilot Sport 4Ss on her yesterday @295 rear and 285 front which look much better and ride much better. Once the weather permits, we'll see...

Jesus H Christ (as I used to say with my Mom in presence so she could not scold me for taking the Lord's name in vain ) that is one gorgeous M8C GC with all the mods and new Pilots. I've turned into a hermit thanks to the COVID-19 stay-at-home orders so my M850i Coupe is sadly in need of a wash let alone some F'ing mods!

What are the full specs of the Michelins you put on? Hate Pirelli's and am intrigued about what you did with the Pilot Sport 4Ss

Note, though, if you haven't lowered yours, you'll be fine. My car has been substantially dropped.

On the traction side, I tried a few launches today and there were damned-near ZERO slips. Once they're worn in (and warmer), these tires will hook up perfectly. I'd still recommend this setup for both traction and comfort.

// edit: 285/35/20 fronts and 295/35/20 rears.

One of the best articles I've read on any model of the 8 series. Really defines the performance attributes so well and explains the driving experience as if you're actually driving the car. For anyone thinking whether or not to buy the 8 series, this article makes a compelling case.

It's immaterial whether dealers are actually selling any, whether BMW is actually making any or whether it depreciates quickly, because jekyll and hyde will both put a big smile on your face.

Totally agree after just reading the article. Granted I've never been behind the wheel of a M8/M8C but the endless power and agility of the M850i with AWD is absolutely sensational. The M8/M8C just ramps it up from there and if you want the ultimate drifter put either in rear wheel drive.

Great numbers. I think you test exactly where I do! I test my 991 turbo in Snohomish! Is that in Snohomish over by the river? Only place I know in the area with negative elevation!!

Nice article but the first time that I see performance figures below what is published.
0-60 is .3 sec slower and the quarter mile below the usual 11.0/11.1

It's also a dead tie with the new C8 Corvette Z51 and only slightly less grippy. All those cars weigh hundreds of pounds less. Some of that can be attributed to the M8's massive power advantage, what with 617 hp and 553 lb-ft to move it, but getting those poor Pirelli P Zero's to hang on that hard with 2.1 tons of car and all that power thrown at them is pretty damn impressive.
