Weirdly I’ve seen quite a few up in Newcastle recently - and one of my best mates has one too!

There’s a black coupe M850 a few roads from
me. And I think I may have the only San Remo Green one… local dealer Barons Borehamwood said they hardly sell any at all.

Still haven't spotted an M8 in the US, either DC or SF area. Rare as hen's teeth around these parts!!

I see quite a few in London. But then you do see a lot of expensive cars here , it’s really no big deal
Saw a Bugatti Chiron once and no one was paying any attention to it parked on the street ( just round the corner from Berkeley square)

Is 8 series GC 840i good to drive? Worth getting one? I like the shape of it, but can't decide whether to get one or not. Seen a few more around the West Midlands recently. My dealer said they haven't got one for me to test. I am trying the 440I M Model tomorrow, but prefer the 840i M sport.

Why isn't the 8 series popular in England?

Short answer - 💯yes!

I test drove both the M440i and 840i back to back. Whilst the M440i was great and has more power, for me the 840i won hands down. Strangely it felt more powerful than the 440 which was a bit jittery - the power delivery in the 840 was smoother. For what’s it worth I get more looks and comments on the 840 - don’t think I’d get that on the 440. And as already mentioned they are a rare sight - although in the morning drive to work today spotted two 8 coupes.

Cost and depreciation I guess? Retail price similar to other marques like Porsche…

Thank you for the feedback mate, the 8 series does look so much better, just a pity it does not have the i drive 8 yet. Will try to check out both cars.

I test drove the 440i M Model today, very fast, good BHP, picks up speed quickly, nice roar to the engine. Also weird thing, I test drove it locally then on country lanes and did about 40 miles in total, when I checked my mileage left on my petrol tank, it hardly went down, so looks very good economically. I have not test driven the 8, asked the dealer and they said they do not get them as test cars. It's a choice between the 4 or the 8, told the dealer to give me a quote for both, not sure what to go for as not driven the 8. You still think 8 drives better and smoother and more feels powerful as the 440i? Thanks in advance

Get a quote from carwow and I would suggest you go in with whatever the lowest offer from carwow is.

That’s been my approach when busying , I just sit down and say I would like this (spec of car) and I want to pay this
Optionally I would like this for trading in my old car

Have printouts of those quotes so if they asks you can back up those figures

Anyway that’s how I buy a new jam jar

Could save you a small fortune .
They will undoubtedly try and sell you gap insurance, some sort of paint protection.
I declined all of these as I believe you get better value elsewhere .
If you want the paint protected, take it to a detailer as that their day job and will do a better job rather than it being a easy bit of profit for them .

Well , you won't get much dealer and manufacturer contributions on the M3 / M4 . They sell well. The contributions ont the 8s are very good . Also depends on the type of driving you like. .... sporty quick County lanes or high speed long motorway driving .... cruise with effortless power and comfort ? In WAS young inve and had plenty of performance BMWs , now I like to enjoy more comfy but powerful driving . Power always there just for the fun .

Personally yes. But a car is very much a personal preference and I wouldn’t make a call on such an expensive purchase without test driving the 8. Try other dealers - he has fed you BS regarding test drives for the 8. Don’t know where you’re based but Park Lane BMW in London (which is owned by BMW) should have 8s. Alternatively ring round other local dealers - someone will have one.

On quotes there are large contributions on the 8 at the moment which meant for me a difference in a fully spec’d 8 vs a fully spec’d 440i of around £50 per month. Given how I preferred the 8 it was a no brainer.

Likewise for me. The 840i is more grand tourer but when you want it, it has enough power for UK roads.

Admittedly all the times I've been to England I've never seen hen teeth so it must be rare.

As above….yes!

I came from a 330i (a 4 series without the party dress) and the difference in quality, particularly in the cabin, is chalk and cheese.

But at a price!

Cool mate, I am near Birmingham, I will try Sytner dealer which is about 10 miles away compared to my local Rybrook one. Just got to decide between the two models, the 8 does def stand out. Thank you for your advice ;-)
