B8 or not to B8

I am entranced by the Alpina B8 and have configured several on BMW’s website. But after having bought about a dozen new cars in my life and eaten massive amounts of depreciation on all of them, I vowed not to buy any more new cars. I have bought my last three cars at three years old, all for less than 50% of the original price, with ridiculously low miles and still covered with enough factory warranty to work out all of the kinks. I currently drive a 2016 640 GC and am quite happy with it, but I made the mistake of test driving an 850 coupe last week.

I was bowled over by the performance! And I loved the fact that at 523 it has a prime number of horsepower. So, btw, does the M competition with 617. I wonder if BMW did that intentionally? The Alpina has 612. Not a prime number.

Having test driven several B6 and B7 and M models, I have found that the Alpina cars have a ride that suits me better than the M cars. The regular (!) 850s also have a great ride and plenty of power.

The thing is, I really want the exclusivity, power, and ride of the Alpina. The problem is that a used one is at least three years out. If I could ‘settle’ for an 850 or an M competition I could get one as soon as fall 2021 or early 2022 (after the Covid/chip shortage market insanity fades) and drive that for a couple of years until the used Alpina becomes available.

Of course, by then, BMW will probably offer a fierce all electric 8 series.

You only live one man! Go for it!

Not sure where you're from, but in the US Alpina's are very rare, so I can't imagine the depreciation being as much as a run of the mill 8-Series.

The B6 depreciated a ton. The B7 massive depreciation. Limited run with small interest or rare with a very limited market doesn't mean will hold value. B8 will depreciate as bad or worse than the M8

Hrrmmm. That might interest me. Might have to stay with the B8 if the price jump is significant. 🤣

B8’s are rare and dealers claim they don’t hold their value but finding a gently used one isn’t easy. I’m 14 months into a 36 month lease and will likely buy the car outright unless there is something better on offer when the lease expires. That aside it’s one of the best cars I’ve ever owned.

From what I've seen, the values seem all over the place. I've seen some listed for high 90s all the way up to almost the original MSRP.

You don’t buy any 8 Series if you are primarily concerned with depreciation.

I bought mine at a year old so someone else had taken the initial hit but I will have still been hammered….not that I am selling any time soon!!

Very true. I purchased mine for almost 50% of its retail value last Aug. It had just over 19k. Yeah, the warranty is now up but that worked for me since I had it tuned (stage 1) 10 days prior to expiration. So far I love it but I need to do something about that damn overflow tank to stop it from fouling my injectors. A huge "known" problem for the 4.4L.

Yeah. Honestly, I just struggle with the cost. Of course, we both know replacing the damn injectors will be far worse. I also need to find a shop capable of doing it. I'm not quite comfortable with that. Really because I don't have the equipment.

My dealership did it for $500. I watched the YouTube install videos, but I don’t really have the right tools either.
