Bmw doesn't use dipsticks in the current cars. In order to measure oil level you have to do it through iDrive

my daughter does - she drives an E46 vert and her car guy father has taught her basic vehicle maintenance.

It's probably another one of their cost cutting measures. Add back the dip stick because it's cheaper than including the current sensors/electronics

You sure it's not some electronically controlled valve that a small amount of fluid is pumped through to simulate the amount of oil determined by a sensor?

Or maybe it's a manual way to look and still keep the electronic measuring.

The 2019 X5 50i also has one. And no, the M850xi doesn't have the "same" engine as the M5. It's an N63 in the M850 VS the S63 in the M5. I also just verified no dipstick under the hood of the 2019 M5.

This is cool, so oil change, and Blackstone UOA, can now be done again through dipstick opening.

WOW.... Sure somebody didn't swap engines ? We need pictures, lots of pictures to preserve this for future generations because once BMW realizes what they've done, it'll be gone. I'll never forget my BMW...picked it up, spent a whole day going over everything then looked for the dipstick, finally realizing I was the dipstick as there wasn't one. Frankly I'm surprised BMW didn't offer it as a $2000 option.

Jokes on you guys, this is the new Active Dipstick Design, it plays a recording of your oil level, they swear you can’t tell the difference

There could be an e-ink display at the end of the stick with a wireless receiver that displays what you'd normally see on the iDrive.

Maybe stupidity IS reversible after all! I hope it's true! I heard dealers were not fans of the stupid system. Made checking and filling oil take longer for them .

We might not like it, but I bet the oil level sensor has saved a lot of engines. I know a lot of people who NEVER check their oil.

As an engineer, I believe you could design a much faster and better sensor than they are using. Probably costs more than $0.10 though.

IIRC the oil level sensor was always there. It just tripped a light when you were a quart more low.

I don't know why everyone hate not having the dipstick. Had Bmw with it and all my others without, I think it's cool especially in a cold state that you can sit in your car and check through the infotainment system.
