Side by side and in person the outgoing 6 looks outmoded compared to the 8. I do agree that the last gen 6's design will remain desirable but you have to go through a period at the end of each car's lifecycle where it's just not the newest thing anymore, so you have to wait until what's old is new again. Could be a while.

My first thought as well. They need to move this to some sort of cool application into the taillights or in the diffuser or something.

Can't believe how uncool the 8 is.

Flagship model? The E31 850i, now that was a flagship model.

Good looking car, but I still prefer the coupe over the convertible.

Wow, looks very tame and not at all aggressive.

Count me UN-inspired.

One major reservation though: not too keen on the deeply sculpted/overdone rear end. I would much prefer to see more of a simple & streamlined elegance there.
In addition, that model also shows to me that BMW is having a continuing difficulty in an aesthetically pleasing placement, size and design of the rear deck spoiler.
One more nit picking observation: I feel red brake calipers would harmonize better with that particular body colour. In a pinch, even black calipers would work better than the yellow ones, as at least they would not clash with that orange colour.
AFAIK, the yellow/gold calipers are BMW's CCB-specific color. Not sure if they offer other color choices with the carbon ceramics.

Striking color combination... but what a bulky car ... lack of style and class i think. I'm not bashing but the older m6 was racier.

The exterior looks bad ass...the interior tho...for the price tag ...meh! Don't know why the interior just looks inferior to me compared to other cars its price range.

Waiting to see what the new M4 looks like. I think that might be my 2020 car.

Back home after touring the Alps for a month in our M235i convertible and looking at the M8 in comparison to a current M240i 'vert, a number of things come to mind:

1. The M8 seems to have no more - perhaps even less - rear legroom.
2. Really, is it 2.8-times better than the M240i equivalent (I've just priced the two up)?

In practical terms, yes, the 8 is probably a better tourer in the right conditions - where the roads/parking are wide enough. So probably well-suited to the US, but where we've been driving it' would have been a nightmare on some of the roads, parking and narrow streets.

And that interior: no, for me, it isn't worth the extra £84,365 ($102,708) over the 240i's interior. For that sort of premium, I'd want something much more special.

If you had a M8 Competition 'vert alongside an M240i 'vert in your garage, after a couple of years, I just wonder if you wouldn't end up taking the M240i out most of the time just because it's more practical. And I suspect that if you had an M4 'vert rather than a M240i, the same would apply, but more because of the handling ...

Was there on the Friday (concurrently with Legends of the Autobahn).
Test drove the M850i vert and it was peppy but luxo-barge floaty.

Test-drove another M850i vert at my local M Town Tour test drive. Same impression.

Hoping that BMW USA will put the M8 into its M Track Days stable next year.
Then we'll really see how good the platform is.

I was surprised that the wheelbase is shorter on the M8 Coupe than on the M6 Coupe especially when the M8 Gran Coupe is longer than the M5 wheelbase whereas the F06 M6 had the same wheelbase as the F10 M5.

This means that the M8 has less legroom than any other BMW Coupe. These numbers below have been taken from the cars.com comparison tool. Front legroom first, then rear, then total

850i Coupe 42.1" 29.5" 71.6"
M6 Coupe 42.1" 30.5" 72.6"
M4 Coupe 42.2" 33.7" 75.9"
M2 Coupe 41.5" 33.0" 74.5"

If the 8 Coupe had about a 3-4" longer wheelbase it'd make much more sense in my opinion For comparison the 4 door cars:

850i GC 42.1" 36.6" 78.7"
M6 GC 42.1" 35.3" 77.4"
F90 M5 41.4" 36.5" 77.9"

That's why they are making the long wheel base M8GC. If you need room in the back get the 4 door.
