Real Talk M8 Vert

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Alright so it is starting to get pretty hot in AZ where the night temps are staying higher and higher. So my top down rides are getting less and less. I have to just express how severely impressed I am with the M8 Vert. I know this thing isn't really a sports car but more of a GT (grand tourer). But with that said today I went through a tunnel top up and later same tunnel top down. I got to have a bit of fun both ways M1 setup same gear etc.... My buddy was very disappointed about how quiet the M8 really is stock, matter of fact it was our topic for dinner as well. On the way back top down same pull same tunnel and we both were laughing our assess off, we both felt as though we had the wrong car driving home! I've owned 6 convertibles in my time from sports car to luxury and I don't know what the hell BMW does but the top up I would put money on it being as quite as a coupe.... I knew it was quiet but didn't realize how freaking quiet it really was till tonight. Sadly I still think top down aftermarket exhaust is needed. :thumsup

Any other convertible owners feel the same way as I??? I will never under estimate BMW engineering to produce a silent convertible this thing makes my old Merc E class sound like a freight train on the inside. Alright rant over...

Looks like the Miatas use their "Stayfast" line rather than Sonnenland, (different backing and much thinner) but I'd imagine there are a few other items at play letting more road noise (and feel) into the Miata.

All the current BMWs seem to use the same material, though.

Idk understand the fascination with noise... I've a92 dyna glide leaking in the garage never to be ridden again because I hate the straight pipes on it...

Guess I'm aging and enjoy feeling power more than hearing it...

Oh yeah, I hear you! Top up and in comfort mode, my vert is so quiet.
But top down, sports mode, and going through a tunnel....the sound is amazing!
In fact, I rarely have the B&W system on when driving around with the top down - the exhaust noise is music to me.

Only problem - my wife dislikes the sports mode exhaust burbles and sound level...but I found a way to fix that. I leave her at home most times!

Well there is a huge difference in straight pipping to a quality exhaust note..... For me I like to hear the engine it is how I connect and know when to shift etc... To me its also apart of the soul of a vehicle is the sound it makes is very unique from one ride to another. I don't think its age I think its how you make the sound makes the difference.

My M8 Vert has a great sounding exhaust with the top down. I like like pops and crackles.

Haartz shows the same Sonnenland for my Z4 but the article I linked speaks to different details. I've realized music inside my car is almost as loud outside (top up). Is the M8 like that too or is sound from inside better contained?

Put it this way normal listening I cannot hear the music playing from outside with top up. Top up I also do not get road noise.

Same answer if "normal" is very loud?

No I would say about 25% of the volume indicator or less. I cannot hear a conversation sitting in the car without it running either. Sound is very subjective but normal conversation is about 60db...
