M340i vs. 840i: Outside of performance, what am I gaining/missing between the two?
As this being my first to the community I'd first like to say, hello! As a 9yr 330i xDrive driver I'm looking for a change. I absolutely love the 3 for everything it is, which has me curious to look into leasing the M340.
It may sound silly but one reason I favor the 840i is it offers the option to add Chrome Line Exterior Trim (M340 only has chrome on the grill). Other than that though I've always admired the 8 from afar. It's stunning. I'm mainly looking for your thoughts on the 8 if you were to compare it to the M340. I'd use either for a comfortable everyday car. My biggest concern is whether I'd lose any trunk space with the 8. My current 3 series is very room and and fill it to the brim with a lot of bulky items. Anything else worth sharing I'd love to know! Thanks! |

I went from m340i to m850i, this car is much heavier and not as nimble... Id have to imagine m840i is a good bit slower vs m340i also.

The M340i is actually pretty much the same weight as an 840i due to the xDrive, but clearly that will give it better traction off the line. I don’t think the real world rolling performance would be hugely different.

Oh if you're talking rwd that may be, I'll never own another 2wd BMW as the grip with the AWD in these new powerful engines is great.

What would you do with the 340 to take advantage of it being more nimble?
If you’re not on the track, nimble isn’t a thing. The 8 series is a far better looking car. I’ve never been in an 840 because not sold in Canada, but either pick, you’ll want either to be faster. So again, pick the car you love |

If you put both those cars side by side, 840 is a much nicer looking car. |

Tbh you'd probably be happier in a MB then, nothing wrong with them they're just configured for a to b driving.

The 840i may have more option on it as standard. The interior build quality on the 8 is far better than the 3, much more luxurious.
I have an 840i and have never felt like I wanted or needed any more power. Test drive both and see how you feel. |

I had a loaded m340i with lasers etc and I wouldn't say for a second my m850i is significantly nicer, few more goodies like wrapped dash but infotainment and displays/features are identical.

You are right re boot spaces..the GC is actually smaller that the G20 in cubic capacity…but is way more usable as it is significantly longer from front to back…I can get my golf clubs and electric trolley in the GC easily, in the G20 I had to take the longer clubs out and put the trolley in the back seat or put the back seat down. There is a massive price difference and it’s personal choice if you think it’s worth it. For me it definitely was, all the car I ever need and I can see me keeping my 840GC for maybe 8/10 years until the EV infrastructure makes EV a viable single vehicle alternative. One thing to bear in mind is that the 8 is a premium car and as such it needs lots of options..a non-optioned vehicle is going to be significantly less desirable than one with all the boxes ticked at resale. |

Hello! I went from a 2020 m340i to an 840i coupe. Yes it is not as nimble and is a lot bigger of a car but not by much tho. Still has the b58 which sounds amazing and has some burbles and pops too. I would say build quality and materials overall are amazing with the merino leather and the nappa leather on the dash and on the door panels is super nice. I unfortunately have a few build quality issues with mine that I am waiting to be sorted out with the dealer but I will love my 8. As far as performance, I would say even as stock the b58 335 hp feels way faster than what they claim. I have a stage one tune on mine and feels just as fast as my m340i with a tune too. I would say go for the 8. Such a unique car that you don’t see very often and I have received so many compliments on the car. Hoping to get an m8 someday tho!

It used to be that you got better tech with the nicer cars, but BMW has removed that difference and 2 and 8 series pretty much get all the same stuff in that realm.
Coming from an M4, the 8 does drive larger, but my cars are never going to see a track so it's not a big deal on that front. I am totally in love with the looks of the 8 compared to my 4, but that's obviously going to be a personal taste. The 3 is a much more commonplace car if that matters to you. It's rare that I ever see another 8 around here. I don't know officially about the M340 compared to an 840 in this regard, but the interior feels nicer in the 8. There is this thread https://f92.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1966233 And here's some musings from a new 840 owner https://f92.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=2002539

The whole of the roof is ‘black glass’ which to my mind gives it a nice look. I can’t really comment on whether it is worth it as I have no idea what the cost is or whether it is a straight no cost choice between the sunroof or the carbon fibre alternative. I definitely prefer having the sunroof but I Wouldn’t see it as essential. |

I wonder if the OP is coming back or if he's a one and done. Give us a topic or question and we'll run with it for several pages whether or not the OP is still actually interested in his question or not. Lol

LOL and spot on. I'll throw into the mix that if the 840 has rear wheel steering like the M850i it will likely be as nimble as anyone can desire. It took me a bit of time to be accustomed to the M850i as a bigger car than my outgoing Lexus (equivalent to a 5 series). But now I can throw the M850i around just like the Lexus. Granted it was bigger than a 3-series but ultimately likely a similar experience.
