Trying to buy a M8 Comp

Im trying to buy a M8 Comp with my local dealership for 79,000.
Its a 2020. After I sat down with the sales person and did the numbers, He came back and told me there was a stop order on that year and model. He said there was a problem with the coolant expansion tank and he was waiting for a answer form corporate office. Its been 1 week and still no answer on what they are doing? Is this dealership giving me the run around? I cant see how they dont want to make a $79000 sale.
I dont see a recall for that problem but after reading the forums I see how the coolant expansion chamber leak.
The part is around $170. Why not just change it and make the sale.
The car will still have 6 months left on the warranty. Im getting anxious
and want this BMW !!

Even LCI models have the same issue… since 2022 there was a new reference coolant tank released but unfortunately it also fails after some time… I really see no reason to stop the sale… just change the coolant tank if it already shows the signs of leak

I just got 2020 & had buddy at bmw run service & indeed there is a recall — so should be a free simple fix at dealer — maybe they want to fix before selling - but can’t see how it’s a big deal

Good luck

I actually bought and took delivery of a 2020 M8CC last Saturday. “Reluctantly” this deal involved me trading-in my beloved 335M 6MT (seriously, that was hard).
Sounds like a “signed, sealed, delivered” deal, right?

Dealer called Tuesday and - this is crazy - asked me to bring the car back. They offered a top-of-the line, brand-spanking-new loaner (not “M8” but as close as practically possible to get to one…). Not only that: I get to drive that loaner AND payments on the loan (100% finance!) do not commence until I get my M8 back.

Sleepless night, because I wasn’t sure what to do, or what even was the legal situation here. (Do I HAVE to??, what happens if I don’t? Is it MY car? Or not…?)

Drove back to the delaeeahip Wednesday morning (yesterday) to investigate fully.

The issue: looks like there’s “no remedy.” In other words, it’s not about replacing the expansion tank. Maybe mine is not even cracked. Doesn’t matter. (My opinion: it MAY crack, causing a catastrophic and expensive engine damage.)

While there’s no remedy yet, I was told it is not classified as a “safety issue.”

HOW LONG WOULD IT TAKE?? They don’t know. Scary answer. They “hope” not long. (Who likes it when their SA uses the word “hope?”). There are stories of remedies that took MONTHS to solve (engineer a solution, test it, document a bulletin, etc.)
The general sentiment of the “veterans” at the dealer is that this issue is not that sophisticated or complex to solve. So shouldn’t mushroom into a horror story.

I can offer these two thoughts that I hope can encourage:
1. Remember that I’m driving around in a very expensive loaner, while my loan is frozen (my first payment will be due 30 days after I get the M8 back). So I think there’s no question about the incentive of the dealer to solve this QUICKLY!
2. I have a an assigned SA texting me updates on a regular basis (similar to me putting “my” M8 in a scheduled service), and a list of other contacts at the dealer. So I promise to share here further learnings.

Just wanted to chime in, you’re not alone, I’m in a very similar situation. Bought a cpo 2022 M8C on 4/18, was supposed to ship to me last week but they found an “issue” with the coolant expansion tank (now I know the larger bulletin, puts a stop on all deliveries, they didn’t disclose any of that). They’re working on it, I don’t need the car but I’m pissed they didn’t tell me beforehand.

Dealing with this similar scenario with the wife's LCI 40i that actually has a safety recall for the IBS system. Received the notice in the MyBMW app even before the paper letter aka snail mail from BMW. Called in late March (rules with the dealership to schedule a recall appointment to ensure parts, etc. exist) and was told sorry no remedy at the present time.

I asked how long? They said we'll get another snail mail from BMW when the "remedy" and parts are available. Based on a few posts on the G05 forum it sounds like parts are now rolling in for the "remedy". I'm waiting on my SA to text me and confirm they have the parts.

So basically 2 months of waiting and fingers crossed that's not the same story for the stop order on M8's for the coolant expansion tank issue.

Same story, i.e., hope. I have ensured while that "hope" takes place the wife is safe. I tested the heck out of the car with DSC on/off and hard stops enough to engage ABS. So although the wife's LCI 40i falls under the manufacturing dates with the issue hers may not have bad parts to begin with.

As usual my friend another LOL post of the day from you. Irony is I do have IBS (not the car's BS integral braking system) but for me the downfall is my favorite Thai food. Spent enough time in Asia and Thailand (BTW best Thai food ever was in the Philippines).

Given that I order Thai hot from the best Thai restaurant in the valley (even has a disclaimer on no returns if you can't handle the heat) I take it in the shorts (pun intended) with the inevitable IBS. 😜

FYI just for shits and grins considering that it is a true safety recall vs a "qualify of life" BS that happens all to often with BMW in regards to iD etc. Here's the snail mail. Yep big block letters on the right stating "remedy is unavailable". Seriously? This is a full on safety recall not "hey can't get my interior ambient lighting to work".

Why I drove the LCI into the ground to trigger ABS with or without DSC (wife only drives to work th DSC enabled) as I'm trusting the most valuable entity within my world aka the wife to drive your BS. Sad state of affairs and once again hoping the coolant tank issue doesn't turn into this shit show that's a full on safety recall.

I FEEL YOUR PAIN! I thought I was the only one dealing with this… I promise you my situation sucks the most. I finally got the XM Label I wanted, and the deal I wanted, and still have 15 months on my M8 lease, and needed to have someone take over my lease before getting the new car. I was very strict with asking for cash, plus finding the right person, and several got denied, one backed out and finally after a month, someone got approved. They did all the paperwork, everything is done, I call BMW FS and they said “you’re good to go, just waiting on the title, it’ll be here any day now” literally the next day “sorry your lease assumption has been put on hold due to a recall” I mean the F****** timing …. If they posted it a day later I’d be out of the car. Now I have to keep making payments on the car and insurance and for the new XM until they find the remedy. If you only knew how many times I have called them over the past 2 weeks screaming at them, you’d laugh…. I am in a terrible spot and if it doesn’t get fixed in the next 4-5 weeks the lease assumption will get canceled, assuming the guy doesn’t back out… I am so incredibly pissed off that they waited until now to announce this and don’t even have a fix. WTF are they doing? This is a 160-170K car, they need to get this done NOW. I am so pissed I feel like my blood is boiling. They better reimburse me for the payments I’m making while not driving the car at all and after telling me I’m 100% good to get the XM and the M8 lease will go through the assumption process without any issues. Ahhhhhh

I pray… I do not want to make a 3rd payment…. It’s a lot on top of my XM payment, I put $0 down so you can imagine . …

Did they say the solution is to replace the tanks with the tanks used on the 2024 models? Or they still have “no remedy” which is such a BS response. They know they have to replace the tanks, just do it already!!

They just told me parts are not available- their aware of recall but no parts - so I’d imagine nationwide shortage

Wild how even the stop sale affects pre-owned vehicles.

Probably at a BMW center only-- but a used non franchise lot wont hold the sale

See above... "hope". Have a full safety recall on the wife's LCI 40i and that's just it "we hope" to have a remedy soon.
