Hi all - booked the car in for a warranty check, but as BMW seem to be getting quite fussy on warranty repairs, I just wanted to canvass opinion. I know a bit of misting is normal (annoying as it is), but should I be worried about this? I’m planning on keeping the car beyond warranty so don’t want any ticking time bombs! Drivers side seems slightly worse than the passenger (RHD car).

It’s currently around 3 degrees centigrade in the UK up north for reference.

I used to get a fair bit of condensation in my previous two 640is but not noticed it in my 840d which is almost two years old.
Are you considering BMW's own insured warranty or a third party such as Warranty Direct? I know the former is very expensive but if you have a problem you just take the car to any BMW dealer and it gets fixed. With the latter you have to call first for an assessment.

Jon D seeing my mothers experience of Warranty Direct, I wouldn’t touch companies like that with a barge pole - would definitely be BMW. Dropped you a message back on another thread asking how much you got quoted for the BMW insured warranty

I do not think that condensation in the headlights is normal, imo and experience.

Thanks for the responses - I’ll definitely be pushing for a replacement then.

This is not normal... I remember years ago I had similar issue on my 545i, BMW had to replace the $2500 headlight at the time. This is unacceptable for a high end car like BMW and especially an 8 series. If you still have coverage from the original warranty, I would push back on the dealer and if they don't cooperate, contact BMW NA directly.

Headlight condensation Info from BMW

NOTICE
Certain weather conditions can lead to fogging on the inside of the headlight lens.
This is not necessarily a fault that requires replacement of the headlight.
  • Upper row (A): permitted condensation. Headlight need not be replaced!
  • Bottom row (B): condensation not permitted. Replace the headlight.

I take it that you've seen the useful info posted by Qsilver7. If you haven't yet taken it in for the warranty check, suggest that when you do, you set the headlights to manual so only the DRLs come on - if it's one of our normal driech days the main lights will come on in dip and probably burn off the condensation.

Jon D I have mate yes, thanks. It’ll still be dark when I travel there, but putting the lights on makes the condensation worse as far as I can tell, plus I’ve got loads of pics I can send them too.

Haha no - I’d rather drive into the North Sea. Only bought the car from them. I live just outside of Newcastle, so luckily I’m pretty close to Lloyd BMW, who are as good a car dealer as I’ve ever experienced. Never been able to fault their service, and they supported me through all of the shit I had with the car when I first picked it up, where Eastern just tried to wash their hands of it.
