I get the hate and pause towards this but it's not like BMW doesn't know how to do FWD to have fun. They're just taking what they currently have with the F56 and repurposing it as a BMW. If you're upset that it's not RWD just to say you have RWD, can't argue with you but for everyone else, it wouldn't be a total surprise if the next 2er ends up being fun to drive like a MINI but more refined as a BMW model.

You Haters Need to Stop Hating

First off, the "stereortypical" Hoftmeister Kink is outdated and is down right right ugly in today's design language.

This is why BMW has modified it on their models. BMW can't sell cars that are outdated. Get over yourselves and accept the fact the new "kinks" are much more tastefully integrated into the car's design.

Next.... Bling sells expensive cars/suvs. This is why the grills are so large. The car needs to stand out. I think it looks great. Again, you stodgy farts need something to do. If you don't like the car don't buy it. Last time I checked BMW is setting sales records. Somebody must like them.

I'm planning on purchasing an M340i when it comes out. I've owned 2 Bimmers in the past and looking forward to my next one.

Until the next time.

I think it's not out of the question that the next-gen M4 will also be available as a 4GC as the current 4GC seems to be doing rather well (and the M6GC/M8GC set a precedent anyway).

The next M2 will be Coupe only though, now that the 2GC is FWD.

Half the people commenting are not even going to buy one anyway.

Im hoping it has a liftback and not just a tiny trunk opening. This is the perfect replacement for my long gone but not forgotten E46 sedan.

turbo 4, 300hp, awd, 30mpg.. whats the hate in that?
The BMW rabbit advertisement comes to mind if you want BMW themselves to criticize this

I don't care about Hofmeister this or that, I'm worried because rumor is this will be FWD!

What the h3ll, the 3er has become such a large car I was hoping for something small and nimble. This is blasphemy.

If the coupe will be RWD then why not just stretch it to make the GC, just like the 4-series and outgoing 6er.

It's pretty much a given by now.

I think the only reason the coupe is RWD is the M2.

BMW doesn't sell the 5 door 1 series in the US I think so this one kinda replaced it I guess.

I hate this type of logic.

>don't complain about stuff you don't like because somebody else likes it

Yikes.

The new cars are ugly cheap imitations of the former BMW and it hurts the brand. Turns out people liked the old BMW and that's why they waste time shitposting on BMW forums.

Record sales growth sure, not denying the masses like this crap. The fact is this 2 series has no soul while the e46 did have soul.

I understand that since the A3, A-class, and CLA are all FWD this follows suit. But it's a total bummer as the 3-series has legitimately become too large. I will still be in the market for the coupe but what if I have kids n shit by then? Would prefer a sedan variant of the RWD coupe....

Wait, you just had to hark back to the E46 to find soul? So the last thirteen plus years of 3er didn't have soul? But they're the one wheel drive wonders of rwd.

A bit extreme but not untrue. BMW's design language became stale with some of their F-chassis cars, notably the 3-series and X5 which were just a nip-and-tuck of the cars they replaced with shitty driving dynamics to go with it. I'll throw in the current G11 7-series too which has been absolute disappointment, it's no wonder sales have been slow. That refresh couldn't come soon enough.

The Hofmeister is still there, but more angled and modern...which follows suit with what the rest of the auto industry has done. It's a welcome change to me.

This is the fight I've had for the last decade. My M Coupe wasn't kid friendly, the E91 and F31 were too large, heavy and saddled with only the base engine and the F31 had awd and an automatic too. The sedans were boring and the coupes had rear windows that didn't open, rendering them useless for my dog. We didn't get the five door hatch. The convertibles had a stupid, heavy hardtop.

So I've had other brands. First a Mazda 3. Then a couple of GTIs. Fwd isn't the devil, it's actually more fun than a heavy, boring, one wheel drive 3er that the wife parked in the garage for a while.

There's a chance that BMW actually knows what it's doing here. As noted, they've actually done a nice job with Mini dynamics and applying that to a small sedan might actually work well. Anything is better than the F series cars, even a fwd "coupe."

A3 = FWD
CLA = FWD

I'm wondering if BMW's logic is to imitate its competitors instead of differentiate? Maybe they know this market is not for enthusiasts but more for entry level customers that aspire to drive a luxury brand and can't afford a $50k 328.

Still sadden to see such a strong branding little by little be diluted into something with very little differentiation.

I think it is an automatic following of the MB approach in the A series. But instead of copying Mercedes, BMW could have separated itself from MB and Audi by retaining rear wheel drive.

But...then again...if I had wheels I'd be a trolley car.

OK, technical question: If it would be RWD, the engine would also have to be installed along the cardan tunnel, i.e. in the direction of travel and not orthogonal to it as with FWD?

I guess this would eat up a lot of space even if you'd restrict it to inline 4 so is one reason the FWD cars have more room?

Yes, absolutely. Especially because the transmission also eats up space. With a Haldex setup, you can run awd without intruding into the interior space of the cabin.

Like I said, my Mk7 GTI is shorter than an F20 but has quite a bit more interior volume.

I agree that FWD isn't the devil but it just cannot match a RWD car by its very nature. I'm sure BMW's entry will be more fun than the very boring A3 and A/CLA, but it's still disappointing.

And I agree the F-chassis cars sucked nuts.
