My Monster has arrived - Some questions
Hey all,
So I've recently received my Bmw M8 Competition Grand Coupe! It was Sapphire black but I have had it wrapped in Satin Black PPF while keeping the gloss black details (transparent PPF for protection on the gloss details). Pictures below. I love it but I have some questions that I hope some of you are able to answer. 1. It has a rev limiter (up to 5k RPM). I've seen videos where it revs up between 6 and 7. Is this something that unlocks after the break in service at 2k km? Or is it an ECU tune that would need to be performed ? I'm in Europe. 2. I don't hear pops and bangs (or burbles). I know I have the OPF thanks to EU regulations but still. Am I missing something? Again I've seen it with pops and bangs when it revs between 6 and 7 in Europe. Again, is this unlocked during the first service or is it a tune ? Thanks for all the help! |

Congrats on your new ride! Looks great!
Not sure if the European exhausts with particle filters killed all pops/crackles but in the US the only way to get any sound out of the exhaust you have to be in sport plus mode (Engine) |

I don't recall ever hitting a 5K RPM limiter before break-in on any of my Ms but I also didn't push it. It's possible they've enforced something on newer models. The burbles get progressively louder; pops and bangs vary from car to car and engine to engine--my M8 has great burbles, few pops and bangs. My M5 was a pop and bang machine. |

Agreed as the car is absolutely stunning! Enjoy the drive.
I shied away from frozen aka matte as I didn't want to have to deal with the paint maintenance. However, I too have now learned the secret for the next car, i.e., a matte wrap via full PPF. |

limeypride what issues are you having with the paint? Let me know what to expect since I have the same paint on order. I've seen that Donnie gray a few times and it does certainly look beautiful. I considered it too, I just dunno if the 8 GC is too much car for Donnie gray. Its perfect for the M5 tho. |

Thanks! Yeah Satin black looks amazing! Thanks! I love it! Quote:
Thanks! Loving the color. Now just hoping for some more feedback regarding if anyone else is noticing a rev limiter of 5k rpm, and very rare pops and bangs? I'm kinda hoping both of these issues are pre break in service "features". |

https://f90.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...19&postcount=1 As for the why: I intended to wrap it in PPF week one--COVID ended any chances of that. After 2 months, the front has been sprayed by WA stones and it cannot be repaired. No shop--all specialists--would even take the job on. I read up on the process and understand why now. One autosalon suggested I have some paint made up, he'll use it to cover the chips as best he can, buff it (which eliminates the matte effect and introduces sheen) and then put a matte wrap PPF on top of the entire front end... it took a little while but we found a matte wrap that matched the natural matte of the paint. This is done now and the end result is meh--better than it was but nowhere close to gone. I had the front end, wing mirrors and side skirts wrapped since that was where the stone chips were occurring. Wrapping the entire car is roughly $7,000. The custom paint is $5,000. Then you'll need to add transparent PPF to protect it so plus another $7,000. No more factory matte for me. |

I'll check with my dealer to see if I can change paint since car hasn't gone into production yet. Anyone know what response I might receive from the dealer regarding that? |

Sorry about your chipped paint. I wonder if BMW has considered factory added PPF on frozen paints. Yes additional cost for them but for the additional $5500 and customer experience with those paints, they need to consider taking some sort of action. Even if it cost a little bit more. |

Also... I wouldn't add transparent PPF on top of the color PPF (if thats what you ment?). You could spend that money on rewrapping the parts that take stone chip damage when needed imo. So from experience I would go one layer of PPF in total, and replace the damaged PPF if you ever need to.

Totally agree on the pricing, i.e., $5K option from BMW for frozen and then add another $5K to $7K in stealth PPF on top of that vs just standard paint and a $7K full PPF matte wrap. Definitely my destiny for the next car. |

I believe that will likely come down to the detailer used to apply the PPF. The guy I used, i.e., Bulldog Detail (and would highly recommend for anybody in the Phoenix area) is completely anal about seams so he will disassemble what is needed in order to achieve that goal. Thus, for the M850i front-end the bumper was disassembled (they wrap the headlights individually) and there is not a single seam in sight.
