Open Trunk Lid

I have a 2019 M850 Build Date 3/19. And I got a call from my neighbor this morning to say that my trunk lid, sure enough wide open. So after taking a look around an saw all the car pieces were in perfect shape. And the car was locked. One could hear the beeper a block away - I'm going to look at a lower volume setting for that feature. The open trunk appears to be the only problem. So my thought were what would cause an electric lid to open. Then I remember that there were loud fireworks someone launched in our cul-de-sac on two occasions the evening before and the 850 was in my driveway for both. After the first boom I went outside to see were the loud noise was coming from, I saw nothing. And shortly after I was back inside I heard a second loud boom. I hope my theory is correct - that I had my key-fob in my pocket when I went outside to checkout the noise. And the signal from the key was active and the fireworks noise concussion cause the trunk lid to open. There have been post on bimmerpost regarding a key fob sleep mode. But, I think BMW did that update in 2021/2022.
Any suggestion or help would be appreciated.
Thanks for reading.

The most likely cause is your keyfob trunk button was held down causing the lid to open. In iDrive there's an option to either disable the trunk open button or to only allow the trunk to open if the car doors are already unlocked. Choose one or both of those options.

This happened on my F82 M4 multiple times and one of them ended up getting $1000 worth of stuff stolen out of my trunk. It was unfortunately a known issue

If the remote was in your pocket...my bet is that the trunk release button got pressed long enough to open the trunk.

I was in a round-a-bout last year and was blasting around it a few times. The music was loud as well. Then I heard someone honking over and over again. I thought it was at me, but there nobody was around.
It was the remote in my pocket causing it as it was the fob was pressing on panic mode due to the corner.
Opps.

The BMW genius types try to tell me it was the remote in my pocket getting pushed. I tried to forcefully push it in my pocket and I couldn't make it happen so I'm pretty sure that was not my problem. Takes a lot of force and just the right place on your pocket to press those buttons

Thanks for your input. But, the key fob was in no way depressed while I was near the car, surely you know that the trunk button needs firm pressure applied to open the trunk lid. However, the change you suggested in the ID regarding the doors may be a work around.

I share your view. In my case the Key Fob is in a tight enclosed key holder in mine pocket. I still feel that the combination of a possible none "Sleep Mode" Key Fob and the noise like a sonic boom at the rear of the 850 was the culprit that forced the Trunk lid open. These car are so sensitive......one time I had a nail in one of mime tires, when the mechanic jacked up the (locked) car to make the repair the burglar alarm sounded.

That is part of the anti theft system that most cars have.

Just an FYI…something happened today that has never happened before (to me). I had put my remote in my pocket while running some errands today…and when I got back to the car at one point, I reached into my pocket to remove the remote because I rarely keep it in my pocket when sitting in the car.

When I pulled the remote out of my pocket…I freaked out for a second first because the remote wasn’t there…but the integrated key was still attached to my key ring.

I reached back into my pocket…and the fob part was still there (WHEW!). Somehow there was enough going on that it pushed the button in far enough to disengage the mechanical key from the fob.

So if that button could be pressed enough to disengage the integrated key from the remote fob while walking around the grocery store…then it is conceivable that the remote fob’s trunk release button could also be pressed while resting in you pocket while moving around your abode…especially if you’ve sat down multiple times.

BTW, the integrated key slid back inside and locked accordingly…so it’s not like the button that releases it is broken.

If I had to decide if the trunk opened due to sonic booms of fireworks versus the trunks release button being pressed while it was in your pocket…I still vote for the latter.

I had the misfortune of having the trunk open on my X6 while it was parked in the garage. I then mistakenly opened the garage door before closing the trunk. A small spot of paint was removed down to the metal, about the size of a pencil eraser. It could have been a lot worse! Luckily the touchup was so good and it looked near perfect.

Wow, I can imagine the horror and the thoughts of the garage door ripping the trunk off the car!

When I had my Escalade I dreaded this happening so I kept the trunk disabled

Irony happened with my wife's X5 shortly after initial ownership. I didn't have the leather keyfob protectors installed on the fobs yet (which 100% negate pocket item pressing of buttons) so we were heading out for work (the wife and I car pooled at the time) and I was wearing dress slacks with not the roomiest of pockets and always have the phone in the left along with the fob and wallet in the right.

Nightmare is somehow the wallet hit the trunk button hard enough for me not to even realize it happened. Lucky enough though as I hit the garage door button to open it and saw to my surprise the tailgate opened I immediately pressed the garage door button again to stop it's movement. Total lessoned learned and put the fob holders on that evening and when picking up the M850i bought a set for it's fobs and installed the minute I got back to the house with the car. 👍
