Canon 80D or Sony A7ii

Hello,

Its about time I upgrade my Canon T3i that I've been using for years (still works pretty well (https://www.instagram.com/isinghstudio/?hl=en). Anyways, my budget is about $1k USD. Both cameras are within the budget. My main use for the camera is rollers for my photography page and car photos for my personal page. As well as family trips, animals, etc... Also is there any other camera in this budget range worth looking at?

Thoughts?

Thanks,

Typically, if you have a number of Canon lenses you are happy with, you may as well go with another Canon. There are always reasons to swap, and it's not a thing you have to adhere to, but it is a consideration.

Your 80D will about hit your budget, and that'll be about all you need to spend. The Sony will be significantly higher, and then you have to buy lenses on top of that. This is all potentially mitigated by what if anything you sell, but it's sort of guaranteed you'll be paying more in the end.

Full frame sensors are definitely a thing to consider. You could look into a 6D or maybe 5D Mk II, they should be able to be found used in your price range without too many shutter actuations.

^^That. I was about to type the same thing. You need to consider the glass as well. Sony's are great, but their glass doesn't come cheap.

I would look into full frame for sure. I started on the T3i years ago as well and worked my way up through canon's line until i could no longer fight the tech with Sony and now have a couple sony bodies and GM lenses.

On your budget, I would definitely not make the change (unless you take photos for money and have a business to eventually write purchases off onto) until you aare ready to dive in.

Last, I truly am a believer that great glass trumps all, so something to consider as well.

Agreed! There are always tech advances in lenses, but it's such a slow progression... there is glass decades old that is still extraordinary. Camera bodies, especially in the digital era, evolve much more quickly. They can be upgraded every so often but good glass can stay with you much longer.

What's the reason for the upgrade? Is there something your current camera cannot do?

Thanks for the replies everyone. As for canon lens, I only have the stock lens and a little 50mm one for portraits.

The reason why I wanna upgrade is how slow my canon t3i is. Taking a burst of rollers, it takes like 5 photos and then freezes up for 10 seconds so it's kinda annoying.

See if you can get a used 5D Mark III. You'll enjoy having a full-frame camera.

So, 18-55mm I am guessing. It's an OK lens, not special but not crappy at all. 50mm primes in 1.8 and certainly the 1.4 are quite good too, something worth keeping assuming you get use out of them. Hmm, you do have some glass you could keep but it's not the end of the world to give up. That said you won't get much for it, there are a zillion 18-55's out there and while the 50mm's are worth more there are a lot of them around as well.

Your location says Seattle, you might look around for a camera store that has used equipment. Get your hands on a few new (used, but new to you) cameras and see what you think. Look for self-explanatory menus and button usage, general feel for weight and button location, things like that. Take notes and go home and check that the prices are decent and think on it for 24 hours, then maybe go back if you like what they have. Be prepared to pay a little more than online but the upside is that they helped you out and it's a place to go back to if you have questions or any issues.

If you do move to full frame I don't think you can keep the 18-55 with it, it's intended for the smaller sensors and while it might not hit the internals of a new camera I don't think it'll cast an image across the entire larger sensor. So that one's a goner if you go to full frame and may as well be sold off with the Rebel as a combo at the same time. The 50mm should be able to be kept though, for what it's worth. At that point Nikon, Sony, etc. do become more of an option.

So seeing how black Friday is coming, I just happened to check on Best Buy and they have both cameras (plus lens) on sale for around $1k

Of those two, Full Frame > APS-C all day long. That's a great prices for that Sony, even if it is getting older.

Santa Claus delivered a Sony A&ii last night. Went out and took some photos and I'm really loving it (especially coming from a Canon t3i)

Are you able to use the canon lenses on the Sony? Auto focus or no?

No I can't. My old canon is just sitting away now. I'll probably end up getting a 50mm 1.8 lens like I had on my canon for the Sony. But loving the Sony soo far

Yup, you definitely need to add a fast prime lens for your rollers. If you go 50mm, get one as fast as you can afford. 1.8 is nice, but 1.2 is better, I think, for your purpose.

With a Simgma or Metabones adapter, you can indeed use Canon EF lenses on a Sony and keep autofocus. I still use my 500mmf4 Canon on my A7R4 and A9. Performance (as in speed, not image quality) can vary between lenses, but I can still shoot moving targets with no problem.
