I don't understand at all. I launch from traffic lights when possible to the first shift and it works every single time.

It was a waste of time trying without LC since you'll easily lose a half second from the absence of quick shift 3 (ZF mode used during launches)—so that was futile.

This is not representative of either my 2019's launch behavior nor my 2020.

On a drag strip, it's also traditional to switch lanes to eliminate differences in road surface. Beyond that or the driver's inexperience with the car, I'm lost. :

My opinion is that the M8 is running a slightly hotter tune. Common in days past with MB to have S produce more power than lesser models with same engine. As Ehloo found out when he installed race chip they couldn't use generic M5 tune. It had to be modified. Who knows???

I believe that as well as a more aggressive LC as well. Remember you are paying at least $25k premium so they have to justify their top model even if it is just looks and more rare model.

They should've switched drivers after each race.

Regardless of outcome ... I'm 61 and currently in a M3 CS. I can easily see myself in an M8 comp in 4 years. My lord that car is beautiful. Does not cost anything to dream.

Not sure what that would've accomplished. Launch control is pretty straightforward. Seems more like a transmission programming issue.

When they do the M5 LCI, should we assume there will be some changes with the transmission and launch control? Or is LCI generally cosmetic?
I've heard many folks complain about LC on the M5.

The M8 obviously has more HP which you can see from the rolling race. We all know that BMW under rates their HP figures. I wouldn't be surprised that the M8 has a good 50HP more at least. Would love someone to do a back to back with the M5C and the M8C dyno.

Either way that LC issue sucks for the M5C. Not happy about that. How could it be different when the cars are virtually the same power train?

So this is an m8 competition coupe not a gran coupe. The grand coupe m8 comp is actually heavier than the m5 comp. I'd like to see a rolling race between the two. It would likely be even closer.

Car Wow was wrong on the weight of the cars.

Not only is the M8c a bit lighter than the M5c but in this case there should be an additional 80lbs or so less on the M8c due to CCB's.

That said, BMW states a .1sec 0-60 difference (3.0 vs 3.1) for the M8c.

Given the small gap I assume that the engine/ECU tuning is the same and the difference is solely in weight/CW value.

There could be some improved launch software but wouldn't that be in the 20 M5 as well?

Is it an engage problem or a short shift to 2nd gear problem? Seems to be the latter in the car wow video, maybe they are the same problem I don't know.

My bet is they program a short shift to second to manage traction issues. When I use launch control on my M3CS it's a complete smoke show all the way through first and into second.

My guess is that it comes down to weight as well if the M8C doesn't have a more aggressive tune as at least a few suspect given it helps justify the cost differential. Money being no factor into the equation I'd take a M8C over a M5C any day of the week from a pure aesthetics point of view. That said I thought it may be a factor, i.e., drag coefficient (and called out by Matt in the video). However, I just wasted a hour trying to find a trusted source with the specs on both cars. Best I could do on the M8C was Car and Driver and they stated .33. For the M5C ended up with a European car spec website that also claimed .33.

It seems mind boggling to me that the M8C with a total height of 53.6 inches has the same drag coefficient of the M5C at a total height of 58 inches. The roughly 4 inches in height differential should allow more air over the top of the M8C than the M5C. The .33 drag coefficient assigned to both just doesn't make sense.

The video was more entertaining than informative. Statistics began to matter less and less as M8 gravitas flashed on the screen. I however prefer M8 GC for practical reasons.

Statistics be ignored - M8 is a gem.

It’s not the cars, it’s the drivers. Mat is a semipro driver who knows how to get good drag times, while Joe “M-car whisperer” Achilles is a clueless, pathetic pretender. Watch Joe’s other BMW videos and you will understand. They should have switched the cars after the first run.

.33 multiplied by total frontal area is the actual drag. .33 itself isn't the total amount of drag.

That's a little harsh isn't it about Joe? I don't know much about the guy but his videos aren't that bad. Is there something specific that explains your apparent loathing?

Didn't bunch people on M5 side say you need to run in comfort mode on suspension, sports+ in everything else and don't build the boost, ie as soon as LC shows up lift brake so you don't get too much wheel spin cause car to short shift. Guess the m8 has newer/smarter software?
