Auto start/stop staying inactive since yesterday

Hi guys, I'm kind of curious why my Auto Start/stop on my '22 M850i has not been turning on.

Car is running fine.

Even when I turn off pretty much everything except for climate control and radio, it's still not turning on. This is even when the cabin has reached desired temp.

I daily drive my car, so I'd be surprised if the battery is low. Annoyingly, BMW doesn't have a way to indicate battery charge.

It has been cold for the past few days, but I doubt that would be the reason. Anybody know what could be the reason?

No idea why you have this situation though.

With the location you are in I would say its 100% the weather keeping it from turning on.

Yes that’s my thought

In the manual there are about a dozen reasons listed as to why ASS doesn’t kick in
If it’s struggling to heat up the interior ( or Cool for that matter) it will leave the engine running

So I just read that ASS doesn't turn on if the ambient temp is below 37.4 F

I guess I never noticed that before? It was a pretty mild winter up until this week

There’s a setting that allows the auto stop start to default to the last setting. So if you turned it off the last time you used it, it should stay off the next time.

One of my favorite coding tweaks was to change stop/start to a persistent condition… turn it off, and it stays that way for subsequent trips. Personally, I can’t stand auto stop/start in any (ICE) car.

BMW killed this coding option starting with 3/2023.xx iStep versions and newer. This would only apply to OP if his software is 11/2022.xx or older.

Oddly, it’s even colder today than it was yesterday, and ASS is back in all of its usual annoying glory

I keep turning off the dam thing every time I start the car. In my previous 7 series you had the option to turn off permanently but not in the M850!

The other annoying features which the 8-series is missing in the heated/cooling seats the ability to go down automatically after heating/cooling the seats. It stays on the three bars until one manually turn it off. In the 7 series it would drop gradually and if the passenger left their seat it turns off automatically. The other thing that I don't understand why BMW did this, the auto feature is only available for the driver, I guess the passenger is not important to the Bavarian engineers! Funny...

I asked about this at a main dealer a while back - apparently there are numerous parameters that need to be met to allow stop/start to work. I don’t do many miles or long trips in my 840i and it stops working fairly frequently. A day hooked up to a battery conditioner or a long motorway run and it works again - my 328GT and 330i behaved exactly the same.

The conclusion to me is that the battery is not 100% charged but not ‘bad’ enough to display a ‘low battery’ warning message. The car is clever enough to switch off non-essentials like stop/start (I have had comfort access disabled in the past as well) to keep things ticking over.

In summary my advice is not to worry about it. However, the battery condition can be checked by a main dealer from the main key fob (how clever is that!) if you are concerned.

Anyone know how this is done so we could do it ourselves?
