Boot/tailgate foot gesture open and closing. What am I doing wrong?

I must look a right tool standing behind my car waving my foot around but I must have tried the foot gesture for boot opening 400 times and only got it to work once.

Is there a special technique to get this to work, or is this a general issue? I was at the dealer last week and my genius there couldn’t get it to work either, I’m hoping a brand new car won’t be faulty but I’m going to have them look at it next time I’m in the area.

Taken directly from the BMW Owner's Manual:

More seriously, once you determine more or less where the sweet spot is, don't repeatedly kick under it. Place your foot in place there for a second or two and then remove it. That should work.

I find it works best if I'm in the middle of washing my car, typically right after I hit it with the foam cannon. Using the snow brush on the back window on a nice windy day also does the trick.

Quote:
Performing the foot movement
1.Stand in the middle behind the vehicle at ap‐prox. one arm's length away from the rear of the vehicle.
2. Wave a foot under the vehicle in the directionof travel and immediately pull it back. With this movement, the leg must pass through the ranges of both sensors.

What threw me was the description of "wave" a foot as generally waving means a left to right motion. Rather it truly at least for me is a "kick" once centered behind the trunk at the right position. Once I discovered this I can get the trunk to open and close (which I do sometimes just for grins to hear the "back up" alert sound) at will.

i think what helps is how fast you pull your foot back from under the trunk. I've found myself to be pulling it back to slowly

Definitely don't "wave" left to right as that is inconsistent at best for getting it to work

I learned the trick two years ago. Stand behind the car; directly behind the licensed plate. Aim for the middle of the license plate and stand about a foot or two back.

Then kick directly under the car in a straight line as if aiming for the license plate. Don't hit the ground or bottom of the car. (Ideally about halfway in the middle) front to back. Not too fast, not too slow.

^^ spot on ^^

As posted earlier the "wave" description in the manual is a recipe for frustration. After a couple of weeks of frustration I discovered the "kick" behind the license plate and it works flawlessly every time.

Anyone have the schematic for the M8 trunk hands free sensor? Is there a way to reposition it if replacing the OEM diffuser?

Thanks in advance!

You can order the sensor and mounting bracket. What's going to be more complicated is it's very likely the wiring is missing from cars with this option delete. And I read somewhere the reason for the option delete had to do with the semiconductor shortage so that could mean a module needs to be changed as well. Very likely a costly endeavor.

Spot on as just the sensor and bracket will make it an island with nothing to communicate and it was indeed a chip unavailable so getting ones hands on that plus the wiring will be the total PIA and DIY science experiment of likely nothing but frustration without professional help.

Not sure if this information I received was accurate but it did hold true for the wireless chargers. When I ordered mine many of you will remember I held out on the B&W sound that put a big delay in my build during 21 -22. During that time I was told neck warmer and kick sensor and wireless charger will not be optioned. During my hold out my dealer told me they all would be easy retro fit after it arrived and parts became stable. Well during my wait they did fit the kick sensor and neck warmer but not the wireless. So now I put one in for 250$ and he was right everything was in place just not the actual pad for charging. So maybe the wiring is one harness for every car they just couldn't source the sensor...... I mean I would doubt during my production they re-fit a harness to get neck warmer and kick sensor installed??? Just thoughts.

Definitely not one harness for every car. In the early 2000s BMW changed to custom harnesses based on model spec and options ordered. That said, I don't know for sure whether they went as far as removing wiring during the supply chain shortages that came and went several times. It wouldn't be terribly difficult to try to locate the plug for the kick sensor either under the floor in the trunk or possibly under the car in one of the harnesses running through the bumper area. However, I did read the kick sensor delete was due to a semiconductor issue and modules were being built with components missing. So, it could be just the kick sensor itself, it could also be module electronics. And for sure there will be some coding required if one is able to piece it all together.

Yeah really hard to tell without someone jumping under and taking a look. I know the Kick sensor runs into the BCM that is located under the drivers seat, it doesn't have a stand alone. So maybe that is some potential luck. Could always take it in for oil change and ask them to take a look a quote out the install too!

Boot opening is more complicated than just feed from BDC.

1. Aerial in boot for comfort access senses key at rear of car and sends signal to BDC and wakes car.
2. Signal from Upper and Lower bumper sensors sent to Evaluation Electronics Module when leg operation detected.
3. Evaluation Electronics Module sends signal via Lin Bus to BDC to unlock the boot.
4. BDC sends signal via K-Can2 to Can Terminator and from Can Terminator to HKFM (Tailgate Function Module).
5. HKFM opens and closes the boot, on closing there is a sounder fed from HKFM.

So I take it if not operational from build there is a requirement for an Upper and Lower Sensor mounted in rear bumper, Evaluation Electronics module, HKFM (Tailgate Function Module), signal sounder and associated wiring harnesses. All depends if any of the parts were fitted by BMW at build and what was the electronic parts in short supply.
