Anyone have any ideas on how to get rid of that code?
How did you get the CEL out? I will want to swap out the grill, and want to be prepared if I have the same issue.

BMW truly needs to either make sure the M is the ultimate M and keep it separate from other models in their model build site. Because of the BMW sales approach, I am fine with anyone putting M badges on their BMW regardless of model.

One of the few things not diluted is the vin number. WBS vins are still only used for true Ms. Though a bit off topic, the following is an insightful snip bit from Reddit I thought I’d share

The first 3 character represents different manufacturer division or group at BMW, not specific assembly plants. All M car is now assembled in the same plants as the regular BMW models.

Here is a quick BMW VIN decoding guide:

(example VIN) 'WBA' 'AA13' '1' '4' 'L' 'A' 'E57862'

first 3 characters = Mfg Code WBA = BMW AG, Munich, West Germany WBS = BMW Motorsport GMBH, Munich 4US = BMW Manu. Corp., Spartanburg, SC, USA

next 4 characters = Vehicle Description Section AA13 - AG model Code for E32 7 series

next character = Restraint System 0 - manual safety belts 1 - manual safety belts with driver supplemental restraint system 2 - manual safety belts with driver & passenger supplemental restraint system

next character = Check Digit

next character = Model Year A =1980 E =1984 J =1988 N =1992 T =1996 B =1981 F =1985 K =1989 P =1993 V =1997 C =1982 G =1986 L =1990 R =1994 W =1998 D =1983 H =1987 M =1991 S =1995

last 6 characters = Plant of Manufacture A, F, G, K - Munich, Germany B, C, D - Dingolfling, Germany E, J - Regensburg, Germany L - Spartanburg, SC, USA
