2023 M8 GC - CEL -> New Engine
Hey gang. Been a while since I've posted.
I've had my 2023 M8 GC in service now for 24ish days as the service team has been troubleshooting a sporadic CEL. They've been doing their damnedest to troubleshoot the issue and have changed oil, changed the oil pump, drained all oil and looked for shavings, etc. Finally, we were called today letting us know the car needs a new engine @ 9,900 miles, that they've ordered parts, and we'll be out of the car for another 3-4 weeks. I called customer service to understand options, which were a) sit tight, let them fix the engine (in hopes that works) and be reimbursed payments or b) ask for repurchase, which I'll need to call the original dealer to initiate. I'm leaning towards repurchase, but I've never experienced anything like this before with the new cars I've owned. No idea what that process even looks like. Has anyone ever experienced something like this before? How'd you handle it and what was the outcome? Also, I've gotta give the service center props for working hard on the car and for trying to communicate as best as possible. Having to deal with frustrated customers has got to be annoying and the service associate has been a pleasure. |

I had an older 5.4L V8 give way on one of my new F150's but at about 3k miles. I let them swap and they update Serial code etc to the VIN no issues and never showed up as any issue during trade in another state away at another dealer brand... Bottom line is it happens and warranty is there for that, exactly that. I'd give them a go, if it doesn't fix issue then maybe you have a leg to stand on for a repurchase. In most cases you won't get that unless maybe you and the dealer are tight enough for them to ignore having to do say a lemon law request etc.... I also don't think it hurts to ask if they will do a repurchase worst thing they can say is no, and then fix it...

I would take a new engine and ask them for an extended 7 year 125k warranty for the car, heck go for a maintenance upgrade too. You might get lucky and they agree. And then you have a fully supported M8 with no worries for the next 7 years. Just a thought.
Your states lemon laws will apply for a buy back, unless they decide to do it as a courtesy. |

I was actually having zero issues, honestly. Drive felt normal, powerful. No odd noises, nothing out of the ordinary.
The CEL seemed to appear only after refueling, and when I retightened the gas cap, it'd go away on its own or after I enabled diagnostic mode and then disabled it. It may only be a coincidence, though. As far as codes are concerned, I did not get any through my own testing and am waiting to speak with the service manager (hopefully) Monday. I brought it in to have them check to see if anything was up, and here we are. |
