High mileage 2020 M850i
Would you guys shy away from an M850i if it had around 60k miles on it? I’ve seen the maintenance records and it’s all been done at the BMW dealership selling it, plugs and brakes have been replaced. It’s in great shape inside and out. But the mileage is a bit high, however the price is good. Do these cars have any known issues that show up later? I have a ‘19 X5 40i now w the same mileage and nothing aside from a parking sensor has reared its head, so that makes me feel a bit more secure, but it’s a different engine and trans on the 8, obviously.
Thanks. |

I wouldn't worry much. The N63TU3 in the 850i is a far better engine than the original N63 that had a well deserved bad rep. That said, even the TU3 has a few (mostly minor) issues remaining unresolved that seem to only affect a few owners.
I would check the service records (from each service visit) and look for customer complaints about oil consumption and/or other engine related complaints. Feel free to report back here if you want further advice. One bit of advice. When dealers resell cars, even CPO, they try to do the minimum to get by. Items such as brakes, I would have the rotors measured for minimum thickness. Also, have the suspension checked, motor mounts, underbody panels, etc .. Take it out on the highway and check for vibration in the steering wheel and seat at 60, 65, 70, 75mph. If there is any, have the dealer rebalance the tires then check again. Sometimes they try to hide bent wheel(s) if the damage isn't severe. However, after you buy the car they will surely bring it up and it will be on your dime to replace the wheel.

If it’s that kind of mileage, it’s likely done on motorway / long trips which is far less stress on any engine than some low mileage cars that go through so many more short cold / hot heat cycles. As long as it’s been properly maintained and is priced well, then I’d not worry. Mileage isn’t what it used to be in terms of buying used.

My 840i is doing around 15k miles a year, but it’s looked after like it’s my first born - full front end PPF, ceramic coating, only ever washed by me, and it’s serviced twice as often as BMW recommend. When I come to sell it, it’ll have every bit of paperwork it’s ever had spent with it, and that to me is one of the most important things with buying any used car. |

It’s in Canada so I roughly converted the mileage to miles in my original post. |

I'd pass as although based on the VIN it does include the full ZDA package (2020s had a watered down ZDX available), DAP, full leather, an Individual Davit Grey, and what looks to be a CF roof. They key is the mileage.
The car was built in 07/2019 so literally one of the first 2020s but no way to tell the in-service date. Either way the original manufacturer warranty is obviously long gone and hence not part of the listing. That said for a reference point my further loaded 2020 was a steal for the lease buyout late last year at $65K and 10K miles. Could have turned around and sold it for a 8-10K profit. Now that profit has vaporized but I'm not losing sleep over it. But the car now has barely 14K miles and realistically is not worth what that dealer wants for a 60K mile car with less options which equals a no go walk away scenario. |
