Joe Achilles "trashing" the M8

Do you guys agree?

I came from a 992 and don't regret getting the M8.

He has a point in that it's a good used car, was always overpriced.

Definitely in Europe. Mine would be >211k Euro vs. $160k here.

And even in those tough times I got it for invoice. So honestly I believe I got a lot of car for my $$$.

The M8 is a lux Gran Touring car, not a sport’s car and was never meant to be a direct competitor to one, so I wish mag writers would stop comparing it to one The fact this ~4000 lb gt can hit 60 in 2.5-2.7 secs is rather remarkable. The M8, again because it’s a gt, is also far more comfortable to drive than any 911 as it should be.

The M8 really isn't priced similar a 911. The 911 will probably end up bring $100k more with some options.

He was really trashing the P-Zeros combination with crappy wet British roads. His first review, was very positive and the person riding with him was very complementary about the M8.

When the M8 was first introduced, BMW management definitely described it as their 911-beater. Just as Merc is doing now with the SL. But it's an apples and oranges comparison. BMW tried initially to price the M8 like a 911 and we all know how that worked out. The invisible hand of the market placed the M8 where it belongs - as an awesome GT.

fwiw, I drove 911s for over 25 years and did not find them any less comfortable than the M8. Longest drive in one of my 911s was 1500 miles over two days. I was tired at the end of each of the days, but not sore.

I too drove 911’s in all versions for 3 decades. It’s not just the seats that equal a comfortable drive but the entire experience. The 911 is more of an engaging vehicle and feeling most every little ripple in the road. I find the M8 in comfort a completely different experience and in a positive way.

With respect to BMW claiming it’s a 911 beater, that was a poor attempt at targeting its market share which they want badly. MB’s new SL basically stole the roof line and rearside profile from the 911 cab so it’s a direct competitor in a questionable way lol

The new SL nonetheless is an interesting vehicle and I’d like to try one, but the 63 that’s on par with the M8 is a ~$200k vehicle and I’m not sure it’s worth that kind of premium.

I think the ps4s are better then pzeros , but one has to admit that driving any summer time in very cold weather (he said at the end of the review that was extremely cold) make the ride uncomfortable given the rubber will become very stiff on summer tires when it is cold
I do not agree with him that the M8 is not a good GT car because it definitely is

HUH what 992 are you talking about... 100k more??

A normal (average priced) M8 is 143k-150k with non CCBS and custom paint without carbon shit.

No 992 is 240k unless you are talking Turbo S or a GT3 with an ADM but those cars are not comparable to the M8 or its segment (maybe the Turbo S but the performance is way different). A true 992S, C4S, or GTS pre ADM is around 150-160 and GTS is 160-175k. Again this is pre ADM.

Yeah they are more via market conditions but not 100k more.

i don't think he's trashing the M8. he's obviously promoting (in a slick way) that used car website by saying it's not worth it brand new, but rather used instead.

I was afraid someone Porsche smarter than me would see through my half thought through numbers. . I know everytime I go to price a 911 with its zillion a la carte options its a bunch more. I just built one with similar options that came to around $200k, which is still in a difference price range than my $138k M8.

LOL ----you will not find one one in the real world (normal 992) at that msrp but yes you and anyone can go and blow it up.

I have yet to see one on the ground thats over 200k in build thats not a GTS or GTS Targa.

The beauty and the bane of Porsche is the ability to truly build a custom interior and exterior to some extent. Its far more dynamic, to your point, than BMW. That 200k car was what model? And what did you add to it? No way is it a basic build and yours at 138 is rather light except for the paint option. Your interior is not bespoke and clearly at 200k the 992 is unless again you cheated and used a GTS LOL.

It really isnt in my book either--- its, as mentioned and I have quite often as well said, a true GT car. In reality I could say that a Turbo S is a GT car too.

In my fucked up head, a GT3, and the RS models are more along the lines of sports cars and of course most Macca's, Fezzas, Lambos, etc (you get the picture that I personally am painting)

I started with a 911 GTS for that one. I did probably indulge in a few bespoke options, but with BMW things like the CF roof are included as opposed to being an extra $3890. Most of the a la carte options each seem to be a few thousand extra. From having been to PECATL (I assume PECLA is similar) it is pretty amazing how you can go there an customize your car and see it all on the huge screen.

Also, do they not have an option for a HUD?

well of course you can get a gts to 200k but its still not easy...

Mine is fairly loaded but with the 2022 msrp base of 136 and final was 174k. Mine is considered a heavier RWD build for most and my M8 was 138k which is actually lighter- my best delta guess by averages is about a 25k non adm margin via a GTS and even lower on a non ADM 992S or 4S

I was able to watch my car in production in Germany via a process called Track Your Dream. While my car was not an order, I was able to access it retroactively to see how it transpired.

Edit- no hud on Porsche 911's-- not needed IMHO. I often dont find the M8 or my M3 or any of my M's HUD a need but instead a want. I actually dont use the expanded HUD option as its too encumbering for my line of sight.
