944 turbo

I'm thinking of a 944 turbo, around 20K CAD(links provided)

it's either selling my 330 and getting the turbo fixed up,

or i might just get a regular 944 with around 8K and rebuild it with the extra money (18K?)

suggestions...comments?

btw, only 80K miles on it, seems odd for a 20 year old car eh?

the 944 is probably one of the least desirable porsches ever built. But, if its a turbo and not N/A, its dope i guess. The only way would for it to be mint and kept in great condition, Because most of the ones i see are beat up.

If this is your primary car, i would think long and hard about it.

944's make fun track cars as well. As a DD, I would stay away from an older Porsche that is not a 911.

Yeah, I was looking into getting a 928 many years ago... After finding out how terribly unreliable they were and how expensive they were to fix, I quickly lost interest.

well, i leaning towards the turbo, but just not sure if 20K is reasonable for it (canadian dollars)

but then 80K km sounds a lil fishy for a car this old.....

I would look into a high mileage 993 possibly. But, maybe not if repairs out of warranty are an issue.

I had 2, an 85.5 928S and a 1 of 50 made '89 928 GT

The GT was in near concours shape and I tracked it.

But they are expensive to maintain and even hard to find expert mechanics. Without the 928 Owners Club, I would have been lost.

I have a 911S Targa in my garage thats 31 years old with 28,000 miles on it. So no doesnt seem too odd to me. The battery is dead, no air in the tires and its leaking oil all over the place lol.
Anyway one thing you need to know about these cars is unless you are a collector, its better to buy a newer one.

^^^^^Well put ^^^^^

Just about every gasket and seal is completely dry or rotten...

I had a 88 Supra a few years ago that was the same story... It ran great, but it just got to the point where everything on it was wore out.

lol.....yea...i get what you mean....

maintianence is a factor i was considering before i look into these porsches

but man...the 944 was always my dream car....but no i'm not a collector....

AHHHH!!!~....i hate this...i guess i have to let go....


EDIT: after reading that E30 M3 Evo article, i'm having ma mind on the E30 M3....lol...
better go get a beer and forget about this post....

man if i didn't have reliability as an issue, i would take a 944 turbo too but just because of that issue, i wouldn't trade in any E90 for it. otherwise, i'd buy one for a reasonable price in a heartbeat just for some eye candy in teh garage every day

i dont' think it's hard to rebuild a regular 944 and make it as good as a turbo....but just that i'm not that professional at it, i'll prefer to keep my money in my wallet.....

i'm willing to bet it isn't. it's just that it sounds like you're planning to use this car every day and for everything. In that case, that's where I think BMW excels in terms of being a driver's car with needs. Being 19, I don't have the experience of having an irreliable car up to date, but I've heard stories and have helped out friends who have cars like that, and I just don't feel it'd be worth the trouble. Having the 944 wwill surely have its moments, and that's probably the m ain reason you're wanting to scratch this insane itch. Easier said than done though, care to sit on it for a lil bit?

Hey don't get me wrong, Porsche is an amazing car to have. But its only the newer versions that have the reputation of being very reliable. The very older ones not so much. You can buy it an rebuild it, but it certainly shouldn't be an everyday driving car if you know what I mean.
My uncle from Jersey has an E30 M3 with 30 somthing thousand miles on it. He just finished rebuilding it. He put an E36 M3 engine inside it so its really fast. Incredible car to have, its actually my favorite BMW of all time but again, I have to say not an everyday driving car. Not cause of reliability issues, but cause do you really want to beat up such a classic car?

944 Turbos are awesome

I have owned 1 NA 944 and 3 944 Turbos.....

Awesome cars for its day.

I couldn't open up your link but you definitely want the 1988 944 Turbo S or the 1989 / 1990 Turbo. These come with a bigger K27 turbo and more power and much better brakes and suspension.

The 1988 Turbo S / 89 / 90 come with 247 hp stock, comes with 928 S4 brakes, limited slip diff, reinforced tranny.

You can get an Authority MAF kit and get 320-350 hp.

Chassis are awesome. Brakes last forever.

The 2 weak points are the head gasket and you need to be religious in replacing the timing belts.

If you are in the Toronto area, go to Mantis Racing and they can definitely check out the car properly.

A tweaked 330 won't hold a candle to the 944 Turbo's performance.

Here are some pics of my 89 Turbo S....I sold it a couple of years ago.... It had the Authority MAF kit, matched injectors, 993 TT Brakes, HRE 18" wheels, upgraded suspension + bushings......

man....you're bringing my 944 spirit back....just when i was about the give up the idea...

yea i know about the timing belts and all those, but i'm not that good with repairing and checking the car that often.....that's why i'm still not sure about getting the car....

i'm not in toronto, and i don't know any good places in vancouver to fix up the 944, cuz i'm sure i won't be doing much DIYs for the car....

btw, how much did you get your 944 turbos?....i can only find a black 944 for 20K CAD ....

hey one of my buddies used to own a white 944 turbo S. i clowned him for getting an old front-engine porsche...but lemme tell you this...i was freakin' blown away when he took me for spin. that scheisse was pretty damn fast...pulls like crazy ! lool. totally changed the way i looked at the car.

@ T-bone...your 944 is gorgeous !!! totally mint.

I bought my 1989 Turbo S for $28K back in 1994 and sold it for $28K in 2005... I spent about $10K in upgrades and drove it for 30,000 km.... so the car didn't cost me anything.

I've always loved the 944. My dad had one when I was growing up, so I kind of have a soft spot for them. Handling is amazing. I wouldn't trade my BMW for one, but it would be a great weekend car.
