According to the Nurburgring post, the m5 was 7.3 over the 7.33 m8 and thus, a click faster.

But honestly when you're up that fast, a minor twitch by the driver can drop a full tenth. Even a extra gallon of fuel can add a .1, before trying to compare apples to oranges.

Personally, I think the lower center of gravity will always help the m8 out maneuver the m5. But it's probably such a small difference, it's a not a big factor.

It boils down to a single snap shot of that car on that day in that weather. Generally these performance numbers and declarations of “fastest” are trivial marketing and mean nothing on the real world ownership performance on the street. Chest thumping from this kind of marketing is for the inexperienced.

I beleive for a over 7 minute test even 1 second is not a big deal. Just think how much a driver can be tired for several minutes driving in that situation especially +600 HP is under his foot
