Blue Ridge Parkway Advice?
I'll be heading from PCD to Philly on Nov 6-7. Is this a good enough route to get a good feel for the Blue Ridge Parkway? The section from Pisgah Inn to Blowing Rock. Don't think i want to drive any more than this. It's 12 hrs on paper but will end up being close to 16-17 hrs with stoppages. Will be doing it over 2 days.
Thanks.

I would say so. It is a beautiful road but fairly slow driving. If leaves are changing I'd expect it to be really slow.
If you have the time, I recommend staying a night or two in Asheville. Great town. You could conceivably make some day trips to the parkway while staying in Asheville and then take a quicker route home. Edit: Also, I'd consider taking 74 to 26 between Asheville and Spartanburg to save some time on that leg.

Definitely - I've driven that same route and it's very nice. Shouldn't be too crowded since I would think most the leaves have already fallen.
EDIT: Looking at the Blue Ridge Parkway webcams, it doesn't appear as if the leaves have fallen so yes, Deja_Vu is probably right. I would expect some crowds. Last edited by mboxM4; 10-20-2015 at 04:54 PM.. |

? Leaves are just starting to change throughout VA. I'd expect a lot of traffic unless you go during the week.

I did PCD years ago and I'm doing it again in a few months. What I know about the BRP is that it's a slow drive. 25-35mph for most it. It's beautiful, but after an hour or two, I was ready to high the highway.
Good luck and have fun!

Consider doing the Tail of the Dragon? You are so close. I did almost that exact route myself in April, but to an earlier point, the BRP can be slow. I had more fun on the backroads off the BRP. Be sure to check for any closures on the BRP. They are always doing some construction somewhere and my route got changed to accommodate a few closures. http://www.nps.gov/maps/blri/road-closures/
Have fun! |

I would seriously consider taking route 221 at least part of the way. Blue Ridge Parkway is a nice drive with lots of scenic overlooks but not really a drivers road. The Blowing Rock Parkway just south of that is a MUCH better driving road and probably less traffic. You dont have the views but you get the curves.

Another tip we did at PCD was asked them for driving directions to Asheville. They had a print out of driving directions through some awesome mountain passes. Its a two lane road that from time to time opens a passing lane so you can pass. The M is made for this kind of road. One of my favorite drives including the roads we did during ED. So ask them when you get your car and they will hook you up.
