Check Engine Light

Good evening quick question. The check engine light came on in my car, could some new wheels which I installed today cause such issue?
I replaced the OEM front 245/35/19, rear 275/30/19. With

Front 245/35/20, rear 285/30/20. Car is 2020 M850i grand coupe.

When the check engine light came on in my 840i the particulate filter needed purging.

Any auto parts store should be able to read the codes through the OBD2 port. Without an error code you're just guessing.

No. Not unless the people that installed the wheels damaged something like the headlight level switch. I bet it's just chance. You might want to make sure you don't have a rock in you grill gates. Sounds stupid but that was my first check engine light. Dealer was really good about not charging me. I have much larger wheels and tires on my car (two sets), they don't cause CEL.

That is good news. There are only a couple of faults that will trigger a CEL light that can be self corrected. One is a misfire and the other is the shutters in the grill. If it happens again, it's likely one of those.

If you don't have an OBD II reader scanner...you can stop by any automotive store like Autozone/AdvancedAuto/O'Reilly's/Pep Boys/NAPA/etc...and they can pull the DTC (diagnostic trouble code) that was set by the OBD II system.

Even if the light turned off...the code is still there. Once you have the code you can simply google the 5 digit DTC to find others that have been seeking info about that code. Or you can use the following site to either enter the 5 digit (generic codes) or the BMW specific hex (6 digit) codes: https://bmwfault.codes/

BTW, the Check Eng Light is emissions based...thus it will illuminate when anything associated with the car's emissions system sets a fault. This has been a federal mandate since 1996 in the US.

Again, you don't have to wonder what caused the light to come on...even if you don't have a scanner...the stores mentioned above will retrieve OBD II codes for free in just about every state (exceptions may be Hawaii & California)
