steering wheel not adjusting to driver profile setting

Has anyone experienced an issue when they enter the car and start it that the steering wheel sits in the up position and doesn't lower/adjust as set by the driver profile? In my case it happens about 1 in 4 times I enter the car, however if I manually press the #1 on the door the wheel will tilt as programmed. Seems 1 in 4 times it just doesn't activate the preset settings when starting the car.

I've double checked the driver's profile and driver recognition setting and it is set to the correct profile for the key.

I'm thinking the car needs a software update. Thoughts?

Interesting. What iStep version is installed in your car? Mine is 7/2022.40 from the factory. Built 9/2022. Seems like a software bug to me.

Have you brought up this issue with service?

Mine does that as well. I wondered if there was a way to prevent this by turning entry/exit wheel adjustment off but never bothered to look for the feature

Agreed, i.e., likely a software bug. I'm on 7/2022.85 if memory serves and no issues.

Out of curiosity what is that iD7 release? Asking as so far nobody's reported getting an OTA on the 11/2022 release that included some additional features that were a subset of the full release for iD8.

It always lies 🤣. There is no rhyme nor reason as to how BMW rolls out the OTAs. For the record just checked and I am on 07/2021.85 as forgot the year vs the month and point release.

Just checked and although the steering wheel automatically telescopes and goes down checking it against my seat #1 memory it goes lower than the setting. Never even noticed that but basically same as Justao. My guess again a software bug but in this case it just goes to the lowest possible position (tested) vs stopping at my setting which is about 2" higher.

Yep, about inch lower from my setting as well

Doesn’t bother me too much, but you’ll keep noticing after you first notice it haha

I also noticed mine doing this recently. If I hit the program button it would go down. And then I seem to have stopped paying attention to it with driving it less in the cold weather so I forget what happened after that.

BMW is now offering a new subscription service called “Automatic Steering System Wheel Intelligent Profile Entry”. I guess that none of you have subscribed?

I got it. It was only $28.75/mo. And, I have to say, it's worth every penny. Like Comfort Access, I will never have another car without it.

I suppose it's nice to know I'm not alone. Lol. Also might mean there is no fix, but I'll bring it up when I'm in for my first service. Thanks for the replies.

Sure will. Unless something goes wrong with the car, it'll happen during the first oil change service. Probably 4 months away from that.

oh, that's a little while yet, but at least it will be spring and I'll be driving the car again regularly by then.

Yes, and the March ISTEP version will be available... At some point they have to figure this out!

What is that supposed to involve? Or does anyone know?

Just got notification that RSU 7/2022.58 is available. My car is downloading it right now. Let's see if this changes behavior of the steering column. I'm not overly optimistic given my car already has 7/2022.40. Small jump for me.

Good luck with that as the last OTA push at least for me is 07/2021.85. Sure can force the dealer to upgrade but not doing it as even the latest "features" are not desirable vs the "hidden" features not published, i.e., further ECU tuning.

That's going to kick in the subscription for steering wheel telescoping and level adjustment.
