Wheel alignment & ADAS

I want to get my alignment checked before changing all my tyres - all feels to be fine driving, I’ve just got slight inner portion wear more than the rest of the tyre on the N/S rear tyre which I put down to the shearing forces from turning right more (UK roundabouts!) on quite an aggressively negative cambered setup the 8 has from factory. Tyre measures are less than 3mm outer down to 1.6mm inner. The O/S rear is around less than 3mm all round.

Anyway, if it is slightly too negative vs. Original factory settings it’ll be minute…Kwik Fit are telling me it’ll require full ADAS recalibration and are telling me it’ll be £300!! I smell bullshit - I had DAP on my G20 and they did the alignment on that a few years ago and never batted an eyelid & the car was absolutely fine (again only minor adjustment needed).

Anyone had alignment done on their 8 and been told that ADAS calibration is a necessity? Anything that needs doing will be minor and is likely camber rather than toe adjustment anyway.

I smell BS as well as if none of the sensors or front camera are touched so why would an ADAS calibration be needed?

Apparently to do with if the thrust angle of the car is changed then ADAS will “think” the car is travelling in a different direction. But if all they’re doing is returning to factory spec alignment, surely that’s how the ADAS is calibrated with in the first place!?

If anyone else could please share their experiences getting their 8 aligned and what was required that would be a huge help - thanks!

That is complete bull shit... The camera calibration happens by learning the patterns that is all. Unless it was removed from the mount there is no alignment needed of the ADAS system. Same thing when the replace the windshield in the vehicle, the tech goes in hits recalibrate and tells you it will self adjust after 30miles or so of driving.

The only time you should ever have to realign the ADAS is if removed, been moved, or your wheel alignment is set so far off that the center line of the vehicle has now moved. Meaning you will need to move the ADAS to the new center line. An example of this happening is when you hit a massive pot hole and your car bends something so now it is tracking hard to the right and you align the wheels to now all head that direction instead of back to actual center. ADAS are always set to origin point of center of the vehicle so if that does not change you don't need to physically move any portion of the camera. (rant over)

Porsche tries this BS all the time as well. I have a programmer at home now, and I can recalibrate the system with a few button presses. Don't fall for these new scams they simply are not real.

Cheers Tenac I thought as much.

That is their justification - if the thrust line of the car is changing then the system needs calibrating, but I know for a fact it’ll be minor adjustment only on my car. It’s tracking true, I’ve just got slight inner edge wear on my passenger rear tyre - which will either be a slight toe issue or slight camber issue (or both). I’m taking it to a local independent specialist now who use Hunter Hawk Eye and they’ve done loads of newer BMW’s, so I trust what they’re doing.

Good call for sure. I deep dove into the Porsche and the auto calibration can self adjust for a range of -1.01 - 1.10 degrees of movement without being physically adjusted. I would assume BMW is about on target with that too. But like I said that is if the center line is moving that much not what your alignment is incorrectly at now as long as you are going back to center line which is exactly what all the shops do any way. LOL I bet this becomes another one of those cabin air filter charges where its 200 bucks for a 30 dollar replacement.

Thanks for the help all - alignment completed today and low and behold there’s nothing wrong with the ADAS. Adjustment was done on toe & camber.
