Curb Rash

Ok, this is embarrassing to admit...been driving for 45 years and I can’t remember doing this to ANY of my previous cars and/or humongous SUV’s...with just 2,100 miles on the car since new, I have minor surface curb rash on 3 of my 4 wheels! Each example is about 4-5 inches long, right on the outer edge of the wheel where it meets rubber.

F’n A !!!

It’s the combination of the car being the widest I’ve ever owned and my first car with low profile tires...my wheels stick out further than the sidewalls.

I bought the tire and wheel insurance package at the dealer and once I put the car into storage for the winter at the end of the month, was going to put in a claim and let them have all winter to do the repair at the storage facility.

So, am I the only one here with this problem?

I’m ready for some ball busting, just sayin’...

After my second or third rash on my M3 a few years ago, I gave up trying to park as close to the curb as possible when parallel parking on a street. Getting side-swiped while parked is a pretty rare incident, and when it does happen an extra inch or two likely wouldn't have helped. My front tire was always the culprit too, I've been pretty good with my mirrors and can place the back tire wherever I want... then the front tire swings in and I hear the scrape down my spine.

The parking assistant on the newer cars is much less cumbersome to use, I never used it on my F80 M3 because there was an extra step or two in the process and I'd always inadvertently cancel it. It's worth a little practice so you know how to activate it quickly, as it's pretty good over all. I haven't had rash resulting from its use yet.

Still.. there are those times when you go out of your way to park at the end spot all the way across the parking lot... a nice wide spot where you don't even have to get too close as you back in with that curb on your passenger side... then, you pull forward as you're leaving and make a sharp right coming out of the space... forgetting the curb was there... those ones really hurt, and something that an SUV would have happily climbed the curb with maybe a scuff on the rubber at most.

You sound just like my wife!!! I always buy her the insurance packages with wheels and tires. lol Her X3 has two whole new wheels now due to damage. Every Oil change it sits for a few days to get the wheels fixed too. Don't be embarrassed just be glad you have the insurance portion and go to town on those wheels.

I feel your pain! I just did a rear wheel "curb hop" earlier this week. Luckily (and don't know how) it only went up and over. No rash but some spilled coffee for sure.

If you're a DYI kind of person and they aren't deep or big. You can sand them down by hand to smooth them out a bit and touch up with a matching paint color. I've done this with the wheel right on the car.

This is by far a perfect fix, but they do disappear for the most part.

Otherwise Powder-coating.....

Between myself and my good lady we did all four within three moths of getting my 328GT. Subsequently Managed two years in the 330i and four months so far in the 840 without issue.

No shame here. M850, turned into parking lot with curb, and wham. Way wider than my previous M4.

I had one of the wheel shops repair it for $150 or something like that.

Friggin’ sideways pic.

Should have bought wheel insurance for my wife's X5 as my god it has curb rash on all 4 wheels. Still am surprised thankfully it's only cosmetic damage and she could care less. She blames it on the lower profile tires vs her outgoing Ford Escape. Hello, that had curb rash on the wheels as well. 😜

Thankfully I have zero curb rash on the M850i but my challenge has been the front end bumper which has a couple of "boo boo's" at this point. I have a quote from the Penske collision center I'd trust to do the work from early 2020 after the first boo boo at roughly $1900 to fix that and repaint the bumper. Second boo boo is nearly not visible as curb bumper rash on the driver's side underside. Just trimmed up the PPF and pretty much good to go.

With the plan to buy out the car going to get an updated quote and have the repairs done plus of course new PPF. Need the hood re-PPF'd as well to get rid of the rock dings in it which at least to my eye are pure PPF vs any impact to the paint. However, they're big enough that the PPF won't "repair itself" like it would from smaller dings. Had a rock ding in the PPF on the passenger side mirror that is now invisible vs when it first happened.

No other sound on earth sends shivers down my spine like that of an alloy wheel against concrete.

And I live in an area where automatic gunfire is a regular occurrence!

Considering that I commented on the wife's X5 curb rash and thankfully being all cosmetic I'm now facing an entirely different situation all together. She of course claims she doesn't remember hitting a curb but is now mad at me as discovered this yesterday and wouldn't let her drive the X5 to work (chauffered her both ways in the M850i).

This one is just pure mind boggling and have a scheduled appointment at the dealer to "feel the pain" of the outcome.

Bloozeman, good move not letting her drive it to work, looks pretty dangerous. Sidewalls take a lot of pressure as weight gets thrown around. Plan on a pair of tires , as each pair needs to have the same diameter so as not to screw up the computer as it monitors rubber to the road during AWD functions.

I make all the maintenance decisions on my wife’s car; just a lot easier for both us that way.

I was quite surprised at how good it was. I couldn’t tell where the initial hit was.

I used your price as a gauge as the dealer quoted $200 for getting the rim fixed from their outsourced repair shop that does the work. They said it will look brand new and since the X5 was already in for the alignment (thankfully all went into spec and no suspension damage) plus the tire just had them go ahead with the rim as well. They said 2 to 3 days to get the rim back so the wife will be cruising the i4 loaner until done.

Just curious, with surround view and the extended sidewalk lip on most high end tires these days how are you guys still damaging the wheels:hitting curbs Whenever I’m forced to parallel park I also take it nice and slow.

With respect to the curbside wheel repair it will never be perfect but for most applications especially when done by someone who is well qualified and careful it will be 95%+

When I did it I had just come out of a car wash so my sensors were inactive, curb was larger than normal as well
