here we have 600 and 617 hp which equal 608 and 625 PS

since the M5's engine outputs are 591 hp (600 PS) and 617 hp (625 PS), I am confused

do we have 600 hp and 617 hp? or just like the M5 (591 and 617)?

power in kW would make it clear

those M8 coupé and convertible are stunning!!
I wish the instrument cluster was configurable in a way that makes it possible to choose to display M5's cluster or even the good old BMW's orange instrument cluster with gauges (since it's digital, it is possible to do it)
I thinks it is a typo in the OP (US press release ?). Other BMW press documentation show the same power numbers as the M5: 600hpDIN/440kW base and 625hpDIN/460kW Competition.

Purely for marketing reasons, the M5 engine puts out 600 bhp (608PS) only for U.S market cars but 591 bhp (600PS) for cars sold in the rest of the world. The same applies to the M8.

On the other hand, the M5 competition engine is rated at 617 bhp (625PS) for ALL markets. Likewise, the same applies to the M8 competition.
Probably due to exhaust reasons. (WLTP)

Of course a typo in a BMW press release .. or carrying over items from a prior release .. yeah that happens too

Back in the day my E30 M3 got 192 hp and the U.K. model that didn't have a catalytic converter was 200hp.

I doubt it is related to the exhaust (GPF) since it would also affect the Competition model power rating. It is the same engine just with a different tune.

It would be hard to distinguish between the base car and the M. I don't think this will sell very well

M8 gains 5mm in width. That's all. Nothing fancy.

I feel like completely classic silver wheels today would remind too much of a regular everyone's car.

I agree that all-black isn't always nice (depends on car, wheel design, body color), but a partially gloss black bi-color wheel, or at least with a touch of gloss black on the hub around the roundel, instantly brings sophistication, contrast, three-dimensionality, and a more seamless integration within the overall design rather than just a single color blob of metal. Whether in a luxury-oriented style (latest bi-color BMW Individual wheel style) or a sport-oriented style (latest bi-color BMW M wheel styles).

The fourth wheel style pictured above is pretty much single color though, just some black around the center

4295 lbs. i.e 100 lbs lighter than the M5 which is remarkable for a coupe of this size.
Thanks. That's lighter than I would have guessed.

I disagree especially regarding the three-dimensionality. You actually lose the three-dimensionality with the bi-color design where the outer spokes are silver and the inner parts are black. Especially when the lighting conditions aren't perfect (which is mostly the case in real life) you actually don't see anything except the outer silver spokes and that doesn't look good IMHO.

Full black is even worse. When the lighting conditions aren't that good, you barely can see anything. If the exterior color of the car is black, then it's a bit better, but with brighter colors you just see a black hole. And what disturbs me visually the most: The car visually loses stance since you (consciously or unconsciously) can't perceive the frame/edges/lines of everything what's inside of the wheel arches. I don't know how to explain it better, but I just hate that.

For me, it looks like a more luxurious and upgraded version of the M6 coupe. When BMW pulled the plug on the M6 was because it knew that the M6 would be a direct competitor for the M8 for $30K less! So it eliminated one for the survival of the new M8.

Given a choice, there is no doubt I would buy the M6 coupe. Look below for side view compare. (Not to scale but close)

Gotta love those wider ///M mirrors

Kidding aside, it seems that the M8 and base 8-series share the exact same widths specs with and without mirrors.

I know everyone thinks they're a car designer these days and it's easy to get on Photoshop and make redesigns without having to make the many manufacturing considerations and compromises.

Having said that, This is how I wish front would have looked without the added carbon bits that weigh the car down. It looks more like the concept car.

I saw pics of this on Facebook yesterday and literally thought it was the 850… I didn't read the text and for some reason thought it was a new 850 special model. I only realized it was the new M8 after I saw the announcement here on Bimmerpost. It just doesn't look different enough. Maybe that's the intention when competing against Bentley's and Porsche's but it should look more aggressive.

I just realized why I'm having a hard time distinguishing between m850i and m8.

To me, new m8 front bumper lower design shape is closer to f30 m performance front bumper rather than the m3/4. It makes me think that the m8 is a m performance model, at least initially.
