For now I'll say that the concept was too good to be true. The rear looks strange because of the taller space for non European plates. I hope the Z won't suffer the same fate

I think we are all being a bit harsh given it's not the official debut photos.
Do I like the car in the pics? No Do I think they are distorted? Yes Is it any better without distortion? I have my doubts... Having said all that, there isn't a single BMW today that I find attractive in regular "series" variant. The only appealing body styles are the M version and in some rare cases the M sport. I think the M8 will look insane with this foundation. I wasn't probably going to like any basic 8 series given that I don't like any other basic series 1-7 unless it's an M. Even the X models look boring to me unless they have the M sport flares or M styling. Finally, for everyone whining that the concept is nothing like this. How often does a production car EVER come close to concept styling? Even the i8 had a couple of changes made to it but that's the only one that comes to mind. |

Less is more BMW. That rear end has so much crap going on. Take a queue from Mercedes, not Lexus.

In can't help to think that there was some sort of vandalism done to the rear of the car. maybe an angry employee banged the new bumpers.
Also really not feeling the kidney snout motif that's appearing in new model BMWs. It accentuates a long nose overhang. |

Just awful. I made the right decision getting out of my i8 and into an AMG GT. This thing is an abomination.

Whats wrong with that interior ? Whaaat the hell. Thats much more of an ugly interior and a deal break than that funky rear end. Wow, as someone said, this is Lexus territory. Too Lexus.

Exactly. This is what I was thinking. With China and Asia Pacific being the biggest market. Most car marque will definitely chasing after cash cow market taste. Those of a smaller market have no say usually.

The thing I hate the most are the taillights. That just doesn't look like BMW to me, it could be any asian or french (it actually has some Renault style) manufacturer. And it looks kinda cheap. The front however looks actually as I've expected after seeing the concept car and the M8 GTE.
Other than that, I think you guys are a bit too harsh since we've seen 2-3 pictures and those aren't really favorable. Besides, I don't think white is the best color for the 8er, the class is missing, it looks more flat and you can't see the lines and bulges that good. |

That's why most people are pretty disappointed by BMW because all they had to do was release the concept they have been using for years.

The discussion reminds me on the story with the leaked shots of the 7 G11.
There was the study (future vision luxury) and we all hoped that the G11 will be similar. But it wasn’t & everybody was disappointed, because in comparison it was just a normal new 7 with some new details, nothing more. To be honest: I was also ‚angry’ but i took the G11 & love it. But i‘m still disappointed when i look to the study.... So maybe BMW should change a bit all that concept stuff. They know before what’s possible and what’s not possible. Can’t imagine that it can be the target for them when we (we=customers & not only the haters) are dissapointed when they show the production car. I know the other brands do it also, the difference might be even bigger there. But nobody care about them like we (real BMW fans & drivers) do! |

My main disappointment are the tail lights. Sure they didn't have to make them as extremely slim as the concept's, but come on, 2018+ LED technology allows for a more slender shape that could have mimicked the concept more closely. The low/center bit that's been added just below the LED stripe seems unnecessary, as the reverse lights might have been mounted within the upper indicator strip instead.
It doesn't look bad per se in these shots, but it's not an obvious improvement over the current 6er and certainly not over the much older and cheaper Laguna Coupé for instance. Yet slim tail lights are the way to go for future BMW coupés as seen on the X4 prototypes, so it's quite a shame that this otherwise beautiful car won't set itself apart as much as it had the potential to as the top of the lineup coupé.
