E46 Paddle Shifters

i dont know if its been talked about before, but i was in my friends newer (05 i think) 330i convertible, and she had the paddle shifters!

they were the same ones that are in the new E92 335i (same look and everything)

this is the first time i have ever seen an E46 with them! i even tried doing a google search for pics, but couldent find a thing.

her car isnt a Preformance Package either, its just a regular 330CiC with sport.

Someone advise... was it an option/std. what?

I know some guys on E46 Fanatics have done an SMG paddle retrofit from the M3. It's about a $1,500 conversion as the paddles, steering wheel and airbag are needed in order to do the retrofit. That having been said, the paddles in the M3 are quite a bit different than the ones found in the 335i and Z4.

I don't know where your friend had hers done but AFAIK this was not an option from the factory. Fleet might be able to offer a little more insight on this one.

SMG was available in the E46 for the 2004 model year. That's probably what she has. It won't take her long to start hating it

When I was involved on the X5 board, some guys had done this with their step trans. It was a retrofit, basically they just installed the wheel with the paddles. Never got to try it since I didn't have any need for it

It has to be a retrofit somewhere down the line. The only non-M E46 tranny to offer paddle shifters was the SSG (the non-M SMG) tranny.

There is a retrofit kit to install paddle shifters with the steptronic in the E46, and has to be the only way she could get it without the SSG.

I believe that SSG was available for e46s for a short time (2004-2005), but it wasn't very popular. I saw someone at a recent Autox event that had SSG in his e46 sedan and he had these same paddles.

These SSG Paddles are retrofitted on the sport-steering wheel of my 01 330Ci. I've had them on for a few years now. I only use them maybe 10-15% of the time though. I'm always in Manual mode, but I generally use the shifter instead. Great for the Track and canyon runs though! And yea, that Z8 Start Button actually works.

I'm assuming you have the 6-disc changer seeing as how you have a tape deck as opposed to the in dash cd?
