Wide angle lenses

I've been on the fence for a while to get a wide angle lens. I just shoot for fun and am still learning but am impressed with wide angle lenses but I can't really justify getting one. I've found a used 10-22mm (Canon) locally for about $500 but I just can't see using this often. I love and use my 50mm 1.4 most of the time (I rarely touch my 70-135) and don't want this lens to just sit and collect dust. So, I ask, how often do you guys use this lens? Is it a couple pics here and there or does it get real usage?

My friend has it just because he has a crop body and he shoots architectures. (he's an architect).

So, for him, its a must.

For you, general shooting, if you can borrow it from time to time and dont really want to spend $500+ to a glass to sit around 80% of the time, i'd say, skip it.

There are many ways to crop an image to make it look like wide angle.

Of course, you need at least some 17/18 - 55mm lens. 24mm (for FF body)

Also, if you plan to move to FF in the future, 10-22mm will have no use on it as well.

It depends on what you shoot most of the time. Between my wide-angle and telephoto, the telephoto clocks in at a few thousand shots while the wide-angle has only seen a few hundred. IMO, I consider it a specialty lens like a tilt-shift or fisheye lens.

When I had a crop camera I used my 10-22 a lot. $500 is a good deal for one, and if it's sharp and in good shape I'd suggest you get it (as you can always turn around and sell it for about the same price).

Other alternatives are the newer (and slightly faster) Tokina 11-16/2.8 and the Sigma 10-20. Get a good copy of the Tokina and it's probably the sharpest of the crop body ultrawide zooms, but you do lose a bit of zoom range compared to the Canon.

Short answer: Just get one of these and start shooting.

I don't use mine very often. My 100mm gets the most time on my camera, but it is nice to have for when you do need it.

I am more of a prime shooter and 90% of the time I am at 85mm+ so WA and UWA is not really a major for me.

I keep a 17-40L for landscapes if I need it or a 12-24 for rig shots since 12mm is the widest I can go. If I had no need for a car rig, I would have 50mm as my shortest FL by now.

As mentioned, it all boils down to what you shoot.

I haven't found landscapes to shoot with a WA so I'm considering selling my 17-40mm for a 24-70mm. Might do me some good..

i just got a 10-22 as a present and its been a blast. tricky as hell to use though. I just threw the 'grid' up on one of the photos i took tonight for laughs. i swear there wasnt one straight line on it.

you're gonna get distortion no matter what with that lens at 10mm.

Adds character.

I use mine all the time. My bag felt empty when I went FF and sold my previous crop wide angle. I just had to buy a new one that worked for the D700 and I definitely do not regret it.

Do it, you will have fun with the lens...

Be careful. Your feet will sneak into a lot of your shots with that lens.

So I'm pretty set on buying this lens (it shall be my last lens lmao) at least for a long time. The only downside is this..apparently the guy I'm buying this from was turning quickly and the lens hit the tripod in his hand. Pic of the damage included.

I know that there shouldn't be any effect on the lens but i want a second opinion(s)

Thanks

Great, sharp shot with wonderful colors.

If you want to straighten those leaning buildings DxO Optics Pro does a great job at the same time it does RAW conversion. I have PS CS4 but DxO is much better at batch operations and noise reduction during RAW conversion. I save PS CS4 for heavy adjustments.

I think $500 is too much for this thing.
