It doesn't even look like he's running in the right class with how fast he was passing people. Serious HP advantage there.

Only 320BHP or even less(2 litre atmo engine)@ 9000rpm(?)
The grip, weight and chassis are the key

The first right bend they take(called Nationale Bocht, which isn't there anymore because of a new circuit layout the '06 season) I always took very sideways (2nd or 3rd gear) in my former E46 M3. Those were the days...

Do you have any idea what the gearing (i.e., gear ratios and axle ratio) is like?

I think it is a 'Drenth' sequential 6(?) speed gearbox.

And the 320i STW is based on the 4 cylinder 318is:

"The S42 engine was a 2.0L touring car engine with a 86.5mm bore and around a 85mm stroke, which shared the same block as the street going M42. Unlike the common M42, the S42 had a more sophisticated engine management system, and had individual throttle bodies. The S42 unfortunately did not share the same valvetrain as the M42, and is a solid lifter valvetrain (possibily from the S50Euro) fully capable of over 9000rpm, but was limited to a 8500rpm redline, as dictated by touring car rules. It was mounted upright in the bay, not slanted, and ran on a full dry sump oiling system. The pistons had a static compression ratio of around 12:1, and running on pump gas, the S42 made around 280hp (and up to around 310hp later in it's life)."

It's not the engine noise you are hearing. It's the transmission whine caused by sraight-cut gears. The GTR uses a manual gearbox with straightcut gears, less noisy than the early squential 'box used in the E36 super touring car.
