So I’m torn between the 840 and 850 GC. What perplexes me is the fact that the m340i has 382 HP and the 840i only has 335. Wtf? Why in the world would they not give the 840 the same (or more) horsepower than her lesser sibling?

Im not well versed here but are the engines exactly the same or does the 3 series have some advanced boost system?

Plus it has the letter M in front LOL

All in the ECU tuning. DME can get you another 85hp with a stage 1 tune.

I thought the fake M badges only added 5HP or so... I suppose it has a few.

They re different engines but very close. The 840 (and other non M?40) have the B58B30m1 engine whereas the M340i and x3/4 M40i have the B58B30O1 engine. They super similar and have a tone of untapped HP (95 from a tune as mentioned) but they do have different cylinder heads. The "lesser" model integrates the exhaust manifold and increases efficiency a little whereas the full fat engines have the classic external 6-2-1 manifold.

Having said all that even the "standard" 40i makes a tonne of power and the noticeably reduced weight against the M850i makes it much more fun to Chuck around on a country lane..
