No more M8 vert orders for 2020?
I've been trying to order a M8 convertible to get the colors and options I would like. Dealer is telling me that when they try to enter an order into the system the build date is August 2020.
If true, it seems that they realize that they have too many M8s on the ground and aren't going to build anymore to try to sell the ones they have. I'm not too excited about spending >$150K on a car that I can't build to my specs. Might not being coming back to BMW... Anyone else hear this? |

Case-in-point for my 2020 M850i the August allocation for the entire US was a whopping total of 5. The vast majority of the allocations were for the 840i and M850i GC. Not verified whatsoever by BMW but I suspected that both of those models in their view had higher potential for sale than the M850i Coupe. |

This may be a production issue or that they can only build so many 8 series convertibles and most of them seem to be M850i, followed by 840i/d and then M8. Also I think BMW is worried they will sit on dealer lots just like the glut of HEA cars right now. BMW should know that someone spending that kind of money wants a somewhat bespoke car, ie interior and exterior colors and options. That is what caused the glut in the first place.

Yes. There are very few build spots left for 2020 M8 convertibles. My dealer was able to trade for M8 competition at the last minute - I signed the deal and configured the car and it went into production the next day. Certain (Priority 1) colors and options are going to push into 2021. For example, no way to get a base M8 with CCB this year and no way to get a competition convertible with CCB unless it is already spec'd that way. Coupes may be different. Fortunately was able to get an allocation.
I do think that BMW realizes that they have too many M8's on the ground. My only guess is that they needed to make a certain number to make production worthwhile and misjudged the pricing. |

There's already a TON of M8 coupes and convertibles sitting on dealer lots. I think BMW should slow production already supply outpaces demand by a huge margin
Quick check on car gurus - 995 M8's on ground in USA

I suspect current supply is a big reason why there are not too many M8 allocation spots left for 2020. I suspect that they will make many fewer going forward since the glut on the ground are going to require large incentives to move. Good if you find one configured the way you like but not so good if you are picky about colors or options.

I was told a few weeks back by a manager at the dealership that BMW was cutting way back on production b/c the 8 series wasn't selling as well as planned.

I hope the 8's, LC's and S Coupes are around for many more years but sales need to keep improving.

S coupe is confirmed done. Just not many takers for those big coupes. My thought is the ones who want sporty ones go Porsche, the ones who want a giant GT car go Bentley

Drove one. Liked it, felt like every other Bmw inside. Bought a 2020 911... not as fast but handling and toss ability miles diff imo. Paid much less even with M8 15%+ discount

My M8 vert is replacing my 991 Turbo. The P-car is awesome. I just wanted something different with a bit more practicality and am fine giving up some of the sportiness. Wife didn't like the Turbo - too low, loud and rough - the reasons why it was great.
Production should finish next week sometime. |

I went from a F85 X5M to a Cayenne Turbo. I loved by X5M but the new Cayenne Turbo is better overall (except for price and note below). Just as fast, handles great, luxurious and smooth when you want it to be. It's carries less in back than the X5M. However, since it is so much more expensive, it's really needs to be better than the X5M. If the new X5M had been available, I probably would have gotten it but there was an 18 month gap between when I needed it and when it is coming out.
One negative about the Cayenne. The panel gaps are more inconsistent than one would expect. Lots of unhappy discussion on P-car forums about this. |
