M850 Break-in, BMW-paid Oil Change??
Question: In Sept. when I did Euro Delivery of an M850i at BMW Welt in Munich, staff gave me a letter indicating that the car should have a (BMW-paid) break-in oil change at (I forget) either 1,200 or 2,000 miles.
Anyone else get this? Dealer here in the US says "No, only "true" M cars get that". Anyone had a US-delivered car get a BMW-paid break-in oil change? Or that same letter with their Euro Delivery? Cheers, ED |

There are also many posts regarding that the break in period is really only a Legal item and not really applicable to modern engines. So there is a common thought that you should drive it like you stole it (DILYSI) from day one regardless. That said other research indicates that at a minimum to properly seat the valves, etc you should rev it and not keep at a steady speed during the break in period. My first 1200 miles will be all commute to work and back (12 miles one way with 3 on the freeway) so I'm following the DILYSI methodology but keeping under the 100 MPH and 4500 RPM which the latter is so easy to do in the M850i as the power is incredible to get to 80 MPH on my freeway portion in seconds well below 4K RPM. |

I know that this is an older thread but as I was looking into break-in rules, in addition to following what the manual says, there are also these 2 guidelines from BMW directly:
