A 840i Xdrive is available. Guessing what is in inventory for spec cars just did the base 2-wheel drive to keep the cost down.

You're very right there... the only hesitation I have with an 850 is that it is an astonishing amount of money to put into a car, in fairness I could use the same money to put a substantial deposit down on another house and then have an income generating asset instead of the 850... but then again we don't buy these sorts of cars for any sort of rational economic reason do we!

In terms of livability (from my limited experience) the 850 ride quality (Gran coupe version) was better than the 540, but I didn't find the seats as comfortable. Probably because I have spent time perfecting the seat position in the 540 and didn't do that in the 850. In terms of fuel I would be visiting petrol stations much more often in the 850 - my 540 will return between 450 and 550 miles per tank. In terms of noise and smile factor the 850 wins hands down, but the 540 certainly doesn't feel like a poor relation in comparison in terms of build quality / fit and finish etc.

I'm leaning towards buying an 850 next, but will get one either on a pre-registered deal or one that is say 6 months old with a few thousand on the clock. This way I avoid the initial massive hit of depreciation - I reckon I'll be able to get one for around £70,000 this way.

Apologies as missed your locale and hence bummer for the UK market. Similar to what I've read regarding M8s with only M8Cs being available vs the base M8.

This is one of those "depends where you live" things, I guess. None of my local dealers show any 2019 coupes left, all ragtops. Which is fine, it's a great car, but I don't want it. Mid to upper 120's.

Thanks for the additional comparison.

I was thinking about this just yesterday: it's like a $30K premium between the 8 and the 5, for a much better looking coupe and a bit more technology. If I hadn't had just bought the 5 a few months ago, I could maybe justify it, but I'm going to take a bath on it if I sell it now.

Fortunately, the 8 is rather new, and will be around for a while, so it's not like they're going to stop making them and I have to get one now.

ZTX, Why not an M550i ???

Identical powertrain, weighs hundreds of pounds less, costs thousands less, and with full leather, countour seats, alcantara headliner, etc., etc., is easily a match in the luxury department...

Not to mention better fuel economy and fractionally faster...

LCI is coming next Summer too...unless you're absolutely done with the 5'er, the M550i is a no-brainer!

Yep - as Brad says - no 550i in the RHD market otherwise yes - no brainer... I have thought about a 750i (those are available)… I do very much like the style of the 8 series though, and for me the 7 series front grill is a bit too "in your face"! It might be worth me testing a 750 though just to see how it compares...

We can do Alpina B5 in either G30 or G31 or the full M car range so it isn’t all bad!

What was weirder I thought was in the previous generation all F06/10/12/13 were RWD only for RHD markets. The F01 may have been the same too I think.

Davit Grey is gorgeous so if you go down that route I'm sure you will be pleased with the outcome.

I was at my local dealer yesterday and their 2019 loaded new showroom M850i convertible was discounted by close to $25K, this is more than 20% off. I guess 1 year old with a few thousand miles these would be steals! This is a serious sportscar.

Yep, this is how I'm getting my M850i.
Hopefully this will happen to M8 in 6 months

May take 12 months, i.e., wind the clock forward to the end of 2020 with a bunch of cars on the lots. Definitely the best way to go if you can find something that matches your desires. For me with several years of looking and deciding on a coupe/sports car I made up my mind in July on a 2020 M850i (reviewed the M8/M8C ordering guides that were released at the time and decided too rich for my blood given my needs) and placed my order.

I did check stock once again prior to buying the 2020 but no 2019s in the entire US could fit my spec with the requirements (Davit Grey or Tanzanite exterior color, full Fiona Red/Black interior, B&W audio and a carbon fiber roof). Could have compromised and saved thousands but figured why bother as with the loyalty and negotiated discount on the 2020 it is everything I want. Love the car and when the 3-year lease is up I'll either buy it outright or go for a M8/M8C CPO if I can find what I want.
