Forgot gassers didn't have one. I took my dipstick in the N47 (328d) for granted!

IIRC emissions from degraded seals.

Next question is whether a fluid extractor can be used.
Extractor question is EXACTLY what I'd like to know as well!!!

Mercedes has abandoned their electronic system and has a dipstick again due to unreliability. Hopefully BMW will do the same for all their engines...

As mentioned above, my N47 also has a dipstick so BMW didn't abandon it on all their engines.

I always thought they removed it to discourage owners from changing the oil themselves and therefore remove the service and warranty issues related to under and over fills.

Also assumed the techs use the diagnostic computer to confirm the exact level vs. the in car computer.

My E70 would report on oil level rather quickly. The F26 says I have to drive for 1/2 hour or something similar before checking. Way too long to see that the car is underfulled or overfilled. I haven't changed the oil yet so not sure if warming the car first reduces this time or not, but then I have to deal with hot bolts and scalding oil.

Either way it's a PITA.

Do apps like BimmerCode provide a more precise measurement than the in car function to help with changing the oil?

BTW, the dipstick location in the picture is exactly the same as my E70 V8 so maybe it was just cheaper to leave it than redesign it?

You really don't need a precise measurement. Technically you should only top off with fresh oil which means no half empty 6 month old oil from an already opened bottle. Notifying until 1 liter/quart low fixes that.

Also, BMW already publisheds the oil capacity so unless one has a hard time counting one should ever over/underfill.

I just put my engine back together after a rebuild last night. I now realize while I had it apart I could/should have easily drilled an angled hole in the block going into the oil pan and bolted on a dipstick. I could have gotten one from any random engine and just cut the end to the right length. SMH

P. S. In electronics school I learned an old engineering acronym K. I. S. S.
Keep It Sweet and Simple. I say bring back the dipstick. You could look at your oil level, rub it between your fingers feeling for dirt and viscosity, smell it, and yes if I'm buying a car I'm suspicious of.... even TASTE it looking for any weird chemicals somebody put in to hide problems.

Likely being added to facilitate faster oil changes via dipstick and fluid evacuation pumps. That is how Mercedes changes. Filter is on top so why not avoid going under or lifting vehicle. I have an evacuator for ECS and it makes oil changes so fast. I wish transmission dipstick existed even more so than oil!!!

So many that are for the manual dipstick. I guess I am the few that love the electronic level on my M4 and 435i GC. I came from 10 years of having the dipstick in my STi and man was it a pita during the cold or hot summer heat (Houston). Plus it isn't always correct either. Drive, pull dipstick, wipe, put, pull, wipe, check...oh man...same thing that you would have to do anyways even if it's a manual stick. I once filled the car with the same amount of recommended oil and drove around the block and checked and saw it was little under the dipstick. Pour in just a bit and then saw it was over the F mark after being below L. That's .25 quart I put in but the level raised by 1 quart! I am done with the manual stick. The electronic one gets me to sit in the car and check is way easier. At low mark, put in 1L, if half. Also the STi didn't have a low indicators like BMW, so blown ringlands and rods bearing is and still is a huge issue in those cars. Thanks god for low indicator to put more oil in my M4.

I actually like the oil level reader. That's my main display in my gauge cluster.

I thought the electronic measurement is fantastic. Why would we want to go back to dipstick measurements? I have the E90 N52, and for 9 years I've owned this car, the electronic measurement on the infotainment display is awesome. I can see my oil level while driving, and when it gets to the low mark, all I got to do is add exactly 1-quart as instructed and it's squared away. With a dipstick, I'd have to come to a complete stop and get out of the car to take the measurement.

Don't know about your weather out there, but here in Houston, Texas. Summer time can be hot and humid out there. I'd rather be checking my oil while inside the car with A/C blowing cold at me than having to get out of the car, open the hood to check oil with that hot moist weather. Same goes for winters that gets too cold.

I bet Chris Bangle would think you're a Dipstick.

And considering that's the only thing you have to say, I'd have to agree.
