Looks like the new twin-kidney grille remains fully open.

Still one of the better looking cars on the road. I like that the production numbers are low and they are still somewhat rare to see on the street.

BMW makes literal TONS of money on their X vehicles so it doesn't matter if they only sold 150 of these worldwide; I don't think the 8-Series isn't going anywhere.

Underwhelming. It is a good looking car with a decent interior but at that price range it should be more special and exclusive. Just look at the concept car and think what it could have been. Tbh, it is not unreasonable that BMW may switch to merging 4 and 8 series into a new 6 series coupe a la new CLE at this point. It looks like they weren't keen to invest on this LCI since the sales volume is so low. Maybe the Gran Coupe will continue by becoming part of the 7 series family but the coupe/convertible seems doomed as it is. You almost forget it exists in BMW's lineup. Again it's a shame because it carries a legendary name and could have been so much more as per the concept car.

Of course switching back to a midsize GT coupe means there is room for a supercar at the top of the range a la 911/AMG GT but we all know well we will NEVER see that day...

It might not matter to you, but perhaps does to them if they are making a car that isn't selling. . Just because they make a ton of money on a totally different car likely doesn't justify to them spending money on another car that they aren't selling many of. I'm hoping it's not going anywhere though.

Did I miss something, is someone saying BMW is selling the 8 series at a loss?? Because if not then its profitable no matter how many they are selling, keep in mind many of the BMW's share assembly lines its just a recipe put into the mix that produces the product.

I don't know how the finances work on their side. I figure they are thrown on the line between whatever else is made at that factory so it's not like they keep an entire line running for not that many cars. But, if they have a car that isn't selling that well does it make sense for them to keep producing it? I don't know where the break even point on making vs selling vs numbers sold is. Believe me, I don't want it to go anywhere, especially the coupe as my future coupe options after this one are quickly dwindling, but it's not like they are Bugatti who only made 40 Divos, but sold them for 5.8 million each.

I suppose it’s a matter of opinion.

I had an 8 series with ‘all the toys’ as courtesy car and had expected the technology and ‘fittings’ to be a cut above my 330i. The technology/driver aids were identical as were many of the interior fittings, including large parts of the facia, dash panels, touch screens, gear selector and surrounding console/buttons, steering wheel.

Obviously other elements were different…and in general better materials and finish was evident, even on small items like the interior door handles.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not knocking the 8 - I ordered an 840 and only cancelled as it looked possible that some options ordered would not be available due to the chip shortage - I’m just saying that a lot of the interior fittings and technology are identical to a well specified 3 Series.

Basically BMW have taken one look at your car and said "that'll do for the LCI"

There's a huge palpable difference with due regard for a heavy performance oriented vehicle, especially with the V8, and fine detail. Priceless with appreciation, maybe $$$$ not well spent without.

Sorry, I have no idea what your post is driving at

I’m not looking for an argument, just pointing out that a lot of technology/fittings/hardware is common across the bmw range. I’m just disappointed that the 8 shares a lot with my 3…at getting in for more than twice the price point bmw shouid be doing better. In my opinion!!

I remember when I got my first 335 many years ago and test drove a 7 with my parents. I was amazed at all the increased tech that the 7 had that i figured would eventually trickle down to the 3 series. That surround view camera had just showed up on the 7. But now all of the cars get generally the same interior and iDrive options and tech. Great if you're on the 3 end, but less wonder if you paid $70k more for your 7 or 8 and expect something extra on that front.

I think I'm on the opposite side of this thinking. I enjoy models sharing tech mostly. Looks ehh I don't have much thought on, if I like the looks then why not. But really the tech is my pep peeve. I hate getting in one of my BMW's and its 100% ass backwards, I like the familiarity from the new daily's. My older rides I get it but for the wife's and my daily's going from one to the other with ease is nice... Until she says I want a G-wagon again or Defender. hahaha Just my perspective.

Interestingly enough I started with an 07 E92 335 and we're thinking the same. You can get pretty much the same tech for half the price with the new M240xi. Too bad you also get the ugly triangles, front lights and don't get me started on the tailights.

With the 8, all the shapes blend in, are in proportion and flow with the car. The shapes on the new 240 look like they were removed from a 10 year old Korean car and pasted on.

How awesome a mini 8 series wouldla looked, but unfortunately Koos wasn't involved in that. Casas doesn't have a clue.

Yes, but what is odd in the specific M8 LCI announcement is the B&W is not listed as an option. That said the overall 8-series LCI announcement calls out that it is an option. So just like everyone else I'm confused.

And as I mentioned the one dealer that offered to put in an order for me, said it was not an option on his ordering list.
