Considering a Porsche Macan, but would have to get rid of my 128i

Lately I've been eyeing Macans now that I'm sold on the Porsche brand. I can't believe you can get torque vectoring and air suspension not to mention Porsche's amazing cabin and tech (a true intersection of modern and analogue of yore). And I keep hearing its handling is as good as many sports "cars" not SUV's!! Tried to drive one at a dealership but timing didn't work out.

As much as I love my 128i, the sporty, small car characteristics of it have been replaced by my Z4MR (there will always be a pre-F series BMW w/ inline 6, RWD and 6MT in my stable.). I also have a 7MT Porsche 991.1 for sheer chassis engineering and aural sensations. The 128i only remains in my stable for use as winter transportation, hauling ladders and long items around (basically sheer cargo storage) and slightly more comfortable backseat room vs the 911.

Only downside for the Macan is no manual. Thinking an E90 M3 is in the future for passenger and cargo hauling. Can't imagine the Macan gets worse gas mileage than an E90 M3 either.

What do you guys think? Does this machine have as good handling as my 128i? I don't care if its previous gen or current gen tbh. Will I regret selling this classic BMW for a Porsche SUV? I've always been an anti-SUV guy.

Pamamera Wagon? E63S? Cars just drive better than SUVs.

I came from a Dinan tuned 135is and my Macan Turbo handles at least as well as the 135 did, is about as fast 0-60 (low 4sec) but has a more meaty top end. Being AWD, I rarely have a traction issue. Even the base Macan is a decent machine if you don’t want/need the extra power. The PDK along with the Porsche dark magic injected into the suspension make it a special vehicle. And Cobb provides tunes for it if you want a little extra juice.

I like the size of it, about the same size of an X3/X4.

i've driven a few Macans. they are good. Better than 99% of SUVs when it comes to handling and driveability.

but comparing it to a 6MT 128i isn't really possible. a 6MG 128i is like one of the last hurrahs of 'classic' BMW motoring before the BMW driving experience lost all communication with the driver. You won't find an SUV equivalent of a 128i. It's better to realise that and stop expecting you will!

That being said....as a passenger and cargo hauler i'd see the Macan being pretty nice. Just be aware that it's still a Porsche and maintenance and repair costs will still be of Porsche levels.

I’ve been pleasantly surprised on the maintenance costs. Since it’s a front engine, it’s easier to work on and an oil change costs the same as my 135 did at a local Indy shop. The problem with the Macan is not driving it so much. It’s just so comfortable, useful and fast, it has become our go to car. The main detractor is fuel economy. I could do better but I always give in to pushing down on the accelerator. Another nice thing is I can permanently turn off the auto start stop, which you can’t do with other newer cars. I put it in memory and haven’t had to worry about it since.

FWIW, our 2016 X3 also allowed turning off auto start stop on ignition. Did the newer ones remove that option?

I don't think it will handle better than the 128 but my friend has one and he loves it (Turbo).

I thought about Macan, it's not an SUV really, more like a small 4 door sedan. There isn't much room. I had to step up to Cayenne for that reason.
I am getting older, turns out that 6MT doesn't attract me anymore and stressing out over fitting crap in the cargo area only making me even older lol. I keep swearing left and right when stuff doesn't fit, gets very annoying
So far I love it, don't miss my M235i 6MT+LSD at all

I have 2019 540, you can turn it off but you got to do it every time as suppose to remember your last setting (of course you can code to remember last setting instead)

Argh, what a pain. My 2016 remembered the setting.

Multiple Macan owner here. It’s one of the most sports car-like SUV’s ever made (maybe THE best one pending me driving the Stelvio QF and Urus), but it’s still never going to be a small light coupe in terms of driving dynamics. The higher trims will, however, beat the 128i in some performance metrics.

But here’s my take - if you have a Z4 and a 911, that 128i is completely superfluous to your garage. Why not get something still sporty but tons more useful. The Macan is my only large car and because of that it gets used the most by far.

Probably something to do with allowing them the quoted MPG/economy figure...

4 door E90 M3 one day. First challenge is actually getting more parking. I have three cars and two parking spots and was just chased off a neighbouring private lot which I can no longer park on overnight I like cars that have utility but I prefer them to be fun otherwise it takes away from the overall enjoyment of motoring and life is short. Thus I've never been interested in SUV's. But my awakening to the Porsche SUV has got me rethinking that position.

I get it man. Have you considered a CPO macan and keeping the 128? I'm picking up a 958 cayenne this weekend but definitively keeping my 1er. They serve different purposes in my mind.

Porsche CPO is the best I've seen. I'd strongly recommend reading up on it if you aren't familiar. Especially if you're comfortable bankrolling repairs after 2y, longer if it has factory warranty balance left

Interestingly, it was a E90 M3 that the Macan replaced in my garage. The difference in practical cargo carrying capacity is going to be huge between the two. 911+Z4+M3 is a pretty fun stable, but it won’t cover all use cases unless you never ever will need to tote something large.

I love my Macan S. Out of all the SUVs in the market currently (including the upcoming X3M and X4M) there isn't anything else better when it comes to just pure SUV performance. Porsche has done an amazing job with the little thing.

Honestly, I could be one of the rare ones who driven the X3M during the M Town events and came out a bit disappointed because we have an Macan S and I was just completely unimpressed driving characteristic wise. But don't compare it to a 128i, it's not even close comparison as the two cars do utterly different things.

I was also disappointed with X3 M. Especially since X3 M40i pleasantly surprised me.

I was interested in one too. I went with the X2 M35i because the price/performance was there. You'd need a GTS to match and you'd be in it for 25-30k more.

They are cool, the price was just too steep. I just looked and they only have Macan and S right now, I guess the upper models for the new one are not available yet.

Icing on the cake with Macan is low depreciation too. Couldn’t say that about my 1 series.

Yes, you can get a small car that performs as good for less but, you get more versatility. I needed more of a back seat and doors. I think a nice analog is the Q5, X3/4 or maybe even GLA45 AMG. At the end of the day you’re comparing a Porsche to a BMW and there is a difference in fit and finish. I never bought into it but now I do.

The Macan beats the crap out of a 128i but then again what doesn't? It's a big expensive car with lots of gadgets to break, that drives unusually well and isn't very fast. If that sounds appealing go for it.

Oh I know that. I wouldn’t argue that the Porsche is superior in every other way. If over 50% of my income wasn’t going towards our future home I would have thought harder about it. I’ve owned a Porsche before and even a crappy one is better than a lot of new cars!
