Low coolant level?

Strange thing happened today in my 22 M850i GC

Started the engine after it was in the garage overnight. Got a “low coolant level” warning.

No liquid whatsoever on the garage floor.

Drove the car 5 minutes. Stopped, restarted. Been driving it since and the light had not come back on.

I am trying to figure out which lid to open to check the level.

Anyhow, it seems to be some kind of electronic fluke to me. Anybody else ever had this happen?

Yes. For some reason, mine gave the same warning intermittently.

I eventually went to the dealer and they performed a pressure check, found everything to be OK and simply topped it off.

Coolant will naturally dissipate, some more than others due to the water/chemical mixture. BMW uses a larger water based formula because water is a much better thermal conductor. Here in AZ I get it about twice a year sometimes just once. If you are putting gallon in there might be a much bigger issue but typically its less than 16oz's.

Has happened to me a couple times in 30,000 miles. The indicator was maybe 1/4" above. Added a cup of coolant each time.

This happened at least 5 times when I owned a 2020 m550i. I was told this is pretty normal for BMW V8s. It was so normal in fact that I never had to schedule a service appointment to get it taken care of. I would just drop by, they would let the car cool, check for leaks and top it up.

Happened once to me on the 2020 M850i back in late 2020. Checked the turbo tank and it was fine but was hard to see/gauge the main tank level. Was going to by some coolant but BMW had switched over and it became a science experiment to know which version was in my 10/2019 build. Hence just had the dealer top it off and hasn't happened again.

Just check coolant level on the reservoir regularly, buy a pre-mixed 50/50 jug at a dealer, and do it yourself. It's a regular part of maintenance, just like checking your air tire pressures (you do that, right?), and oil level. New vehicles always have air in the system, and if you take care of topping it off for the first few months of ownership, until there's no more air in the system, you'd only have to top it off a little very seldom. Not sure if BMWs have a pressurized reservoir or not (I assume they do), but non-pressurized systems evaporate more water, for obvious reasons, and require more frequent topping off. However, once the system is stabilized, I'd only add distilled water, as not to over-concentrate the coolant much over 50/50.

My M850 did this a few days ago. 11500kms. The dealershipped topped up the fluid in both reservoirs for me. There's one for the turbos and one for the engine.

They topped it up with BLUE, not green. They bullshitted that it's the same thing, but what I've read is that green is compatible with blue, but blue shouldn't be used on 2018+ BMW cars.

I just sent the service manager an email and said they need to do a coolant flush on my car now. I also said in the email I was surprised his techs didn't know the difference. Unbeleivable!
