My M8 convertible is toast. Hit at intersection @ 65mph

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Was hit at intersection by driver going approximately 65 mph in the drivers side fender/wheel area. Impact at about 35 degree angle. Three more feet rearward and I'd have been toast! Knocked car about six feet and then wedged on curb. Driver of other car had already hit one car before hitting me and was still at that rate of speed!! Ran light. Fortunately no one seriously injured. Suspect he was uninsured. Will find out tomorrow.

At this point it awaits evaluation for damage by adjuster. Car only 4 months old and less than 4000 miles. Aarrgh. Those that have more knowledge than I please offers opinions as to what to push for. Should I expect it will be totaled or repaired? With that force of impact I would imagine structural damage. Thx

Damn, sorry to hear that. Glad that you are doing ok and still manage to share your story.

If you don't mind some pictures, maybe some of us can help to identify whether it will buffed out or total.

That's awful to hear. Glad you are OK. Sounds pretty bad but it depends on whether there is frame or engine damage. In any case, I'd push to get it totaled.

Here is OP's picture.
I would call it a total loss.
Frame is bent for sure and oil cooler most likely is damaged too.

Glad to hear you came out of it unscathed!

Is it your car or leased? If leased, are you into it for a large downpayment?

Either way, do you have a "like for like" replacement (often called "New Car Replacement") with your insurance? I did with All State insurance so we pushed for a write-off by ensuring every single element or possible element of damage was accounted for and its replacement/repair cost considered in the final repair bill. That approach got us over the line and All State bought me a new car as opposed to returning some Frankenstein's monster to me.

I wonder what the passenger side, suspension and underside looks like. Here's hoping that the curb damaged all of them so that that OP has the car totaled.

Have no idea about underside though it was leaking fluids and engine wouldn't start nor would electrics turn off from start/stop. Passenger side as far as I know was not damaged.

Yikes so sorry to hear! Glad you are ok. It's crazy how many reckless drivers are out there. I saw a guy doing at least 130 on the Interstate yesterday making a three lane change wildly.

The damage is likely make itself clear from the supplemental, if it isn't already considered a total loss. Sub frame damage or engine damage would tip the scales.

Rooting for a bent frame. That generally ends the entire conversation right there.

Glad you are not toast! It's also good it was clearly not your fault. The car can be fixed, and replaced if you're not happy with it.

hilsman glad you are OK. That is a frightening speed to have a collision. It hurts just looking at the pictures. Looks repairable, but a damage frame will change that. Keep us updated.

Sorry to hear that. Regardless of damage, it's now a car after accident a reasonably bad one. I would push for replacement w same.

Pardon my question here as I have no reason to doubt you but I am having a hard time believing that the damage was from a 60mph collision.

Consumer test does it from 29 degrees and 39mph and the damage looks similar. at 60mph we are talking significantly more damage. The wheel has very little visible damage (no center cap / hub push in) which seems strange given it was at the center of impact.

Regardless, glad to hear you are safe and sorry about the damage to your beautiful car.

As Austin Powers would say, "ouch, very ouch!"
It sad to see a beauty like that got ruined so early in its life!

When speaking with both your insurer or the other driver's (if they have insurance) make sure to file for not only repairs but ALSO a diminished value claim. This claim is usually awarded on newer cars and be thousands of $. Effectively it is the value lost because the car has been involved in an accident.

Had 2 year old 535, $5000 in damage fixed by BMW certified collision company and also received $4500 in diminished value claim proceeds.

You might need to do a little extra work...and your insurer should help get it done.

Repairable, no problem. It will take a couple months to get parts. That's not that bad of hit for a certified BMW shop. The front of that car is modular. I can have it stripped down to the motor in a couple hours. Parts will be expensive but not near enough to total it. Your going to need a 60K-70k estimate to total it.
