bumper repaint / replacement

Hi guys, I scratched my bumper and took it to a body shop, I thought it was gonna be an easy repaint but the guy said he would need to replace the whole bumper because the plastic is showing. Wanted to get your opinions on this, thank you!!

I could match that with a rattle can and make it look good. Is the black mark a scrape or a perforation through the plastic?

It’s a scrape, didn’t look too bad to me but the body shop guy was like no we can’t maintain the original shape if we repaint it

I’ve had similar scuffs and scrapes in the past and my body shop fixed it. They’ll have to remove the bumper and probably sand it down or whatever and repaint it but I don’t think you need a whole new bumper.

That's a routine repaint job. I'd not go back to a shop that told me that.

That’s what I thought too, thank you! I’ll go to another shop

Easy to repaint and even fill in some of the plastic if necessary to reshape it back to spec. That said be prepared for a proper shop to want to pull the bumper for the work plus a full spray vs just a blend. That may also require recalibrating the cameras once remounted. Penske Collision whom I absolutely trust told me it's a 50/50 shot at the need for recalibration so they included it in my quote.

My ding is much smaller and less noticable but does have a gouge in the plastic so Penske will fill and reshape under the quote. Just haven't pulled the trigger yet on getting the work done as I'll need to re-PPF the bumper and now planning that plus the hood with some rock dings in the PPF that would not self-heal.

Good luck with getting your bumper work done. 👍

I suggest getting a second and maybe third opinion. From my experience if the plastic isn't punctured, usually a body shop can fill the damaged area and repaint.
