Just some bits of info that have been discussed at length in the M3 forums to help ease all your collective minds as you scream 80k wtf.
First is, the e46 M3 (last gen) had a MSRP of $48k. For the e92 M3 to have a MSRP of over $60k that is a near 50% mark up over the last generation. That won't happen. Secondly, the price has been estimated by many journalists and the guesses have been everywhere from mid 50s to 80k. BMW has not officially released a price and when they do, do you really think it will be to some KTLA reporter? I doubt it. Third, the RS4 had a $80k price for the duration of its life time while the e46 M3 remained $48k. The RS4 has been debated and found to be in a different class than the M3. While their performance may be similar that isn't all of the equation that is automobile class. Also, BMW is not going to price match the car to Audi, it will be what they deem appropriate. Forth, many price comparisons have been done for the current M5 (e60) to the last generation M5 (e39). As well as the price difference between the current and last gen top of the line 5 series to the M5. There was found to be an overall compounded 30% mark up from the top 5 series to the M5. Following this logic it was found that the new M3 would end up around mid $50k's. Lastly, in terms of auto pricing in the US compared to other countries you can NOT directly use currency conversion to predict prices. It simply doesn't work like that, as some one above mentioned its more about market share and the US market has extremely lower prices than the rest of the world for automobiles. This is only exaggerated when you include lower import taxes and different available options. All other M cars' prices from BMW Europe do not match the BMW NA price through the currency conversion. Not to mention that $80 is only about 5k off from the M5 price, which would be absurd for BMW to price both cars so closely together when there is such a drastic difference between them. |

If the dealer decides to mark-up, which will be unlikely if they plan on moving many units, the price will be in the low $70s. Thus, editors and people alike throw numbers like 'almost $80k' around. |

$80+k isn't a good idea for 3 series M cars, because it would scare of lots of buyer away to choose other higher level options like porsche, MB, etc...

I wouldn't call a MB a higher level option. As for porsches, I think the higher level would end up causing you to shell out near $100k. So the real worry here is the new GT-R that is coming by Nissan, but those will be limited to 2000 units per year and will have a extreme mark up. So good luck getting one of those.
BMW is planning on the M3 being popular so I really doubt there will be any mark up for difficulty at all getting one. |

IT'S OBVIOUS that the journalist was mis-informed..... (this is very common among them).
All the reason have already said. I wouln't buy an M3 for that kind of money!! And you had to be more than crazy to do it! |

Sorry, I know nothing about the double top in gold prices. You've got the wrong character.

This thread was dead when it started and then dead again on 11/24 and 11/29. westwest - cut the over dramatic sensationalism on top of a thread already way too full of that. No need to post here in the first place then to add dissing of regular members on top of it.

Also, there's likely to be a still-weaker consumer on both sides of the Atlantic in 2008 - so BMW either has to eat some more USD pain :sad0147: to move the M3 in a MAJOR market or watch sales slow after the initial launch fever has died. At that level give me a low mileage Carrera S, thanks - or GT-R (I suspect these will command a premium though ... $80s).

The 20% increase in the price from the 2006 model year has nothing to do with the forex markets. Check the increase in the European markets and you'll see.

This entire thread is a prime example of why the US market never received the Euro version of the E36 M3 with the S50B30 & B32 engines....
Back in the 90s BMW felt that an American was not willing to spend $50K on an E36 M3 so they came out with the US version that was nothing more than a beefed up 328 with a new head, crank, and cams. It looks like they were right then, and they might be wrong now... It appears that Americans are still not willing to pay the price of BMW performance. |

some dumb bimbo will have her daddy buy it for her......
my local dealer was selling the 335i cabrio for $76k.........so $80k for a M3 is reasonable.

This is slightly OT, but has some price and availability data for the 1 series, and maybe the M3 data will be coming out soon.
On March 22, 2008, the all-new BMW 1 Series Coupes will go on sale in the US. Base price for the 135i Coupe is $35,675. The 128i will be standardly equipped with a moonroof, automatic climate control, Dynamic Stability Control, multi-function steering wheel and 17" wheels!!! The 135i Coupe will have all the above plus the M Aerodynamic Kit, sports suspension, 18" wheels with performance tires, 6-piston high-performance brakes, Xenon Adaptive headlights and wood trim. The online configurator should be available soon. |
