When I first got my M850i last year, the digital key did not work. I think it was a regional thing and Canada just never got it for Samsung phones, like the S21+ I have. The BMW app would just say the digital key is not supported on my phone.

I decided to try again (after 8 months?) and hey, digital key now works on my S21+.

So if anyone else in Canada never had it working on Samsung, maybe try again now.

For Android support in general on the 8-series for the digital key one just needs a 07/2021 build date or later and it should work. The compatible device list is long at this point and for Samsung that includes the S20 or greater. The irony is up to the 07/2021 build date only Samsung was supported so odd you couldn't get it to work until now.

Me? I'm stuck with the NFC on my 10/2019 build M850i which only supports Samsung devices. So my Pixel 7 Pro will never work but on the flip side it works like a champ including UWB comfort access via Digital Key Plus on the wife's 2024 X5 40i.

I found the reason:

BMW digital key requires Samsung Wallet which was not available in Canda until sometime this year.

Good to know and that would indeed be a requirement. Just odd as to why it wasn't available in Canada until now. Perhaps some regulatory hoops to jump through to prove it's safe, etc. for the population to use.
