Darker evenings and clearer skies, hopefully the start of a decent aurora season.

We've had auroral displays on 2 consecutive nights now, and the forecast is also good for tonight. I hope this is the start of a good season.
Here's one from last night, taken at the ruins of Duffus Castle, Morayshire, about 3 miles from home. Duffus Aurora_4066 by Alan Butterfield, on Flickr

When I went over to Duffus Castle for some aurora shots last night, I tried an HDR pano just before the sun went down.

Nice pano, Alan. Love the composition with the road angling up through the image. Nicely done.

Aurora on 3 consecutive nights.
Last night however the aurora didn't really do much. We got a green arc on the northern horizon, and that's where it stayed. A pal of mine turned up with a new toy - a high power torch, which will be useful for 'light painting'. Just for fun, here's one of my pal Gary. Beam Me Up Scotty by Alan Butterfield, on Flickr

I was out shooting with the Grand Prairie Butterfly club today. The weather was perfect. There were an ungodly amount of butterflies around today. Loads of monarchs, orange sulphers, common buckeyes, sliver spotter skippers, red admirals, painted ladies, etc, etc. Truly a target rich environment. But my favorite shot of the day was this Greater Yellow Legs skipping around the marsh.

Nice shot of Point Reyes Ed, we were over there about 10 years ago, so a great reminder.
I remember we stayed one night in a little place called Inverness. It sticks in my mind because we live only about 40 miles from the 'real' Inverness. Beautiful shot of the Greater Yellow Legs Mark, perfect timing.

Great shot Mark!
Alan, Inverness is a great place to stay when visiting the area. There is also a wonderful deli there where I always stop for picnic food before heading out in search of pictures. |
