I had the same opinion until I realized my 540ix was a hybrid and I didn't even know it. No plug in just fill with gas and it charges automatically. It only adds about 11 HP but you really do notice it taking off from a stop.
My buddy bought a Tesla Plaid and took me for a ride. 0-60 in 1.9 seconds. Those EV's got game but I'm still not sold on the whole EV concept. |

That's great and all, but there's nothing like exhaust sound and the thrill of a mechanical, rough, ICE. Granted, they're pretty smooth now, but the exhaust sound and the intakes screaming with turbo spool… Call me old school but that's what cars are to me. EVs are just big golf carts IMO and I don't think they're the future, but that's a completely different topic.
This is the reason I went full M this time around, I plan to keep it and garage it after a while. I'll eventually get an EV and fall in line if need be, but it's not the same. |

I actually really like the idea of a hybrid M car. You can do your everyday shopping trips with great fuel economy, can leave your neigborhood silently at night and still have a sick sports car with a petrol engine when you want to.
Performance wise it's going to be sick too. |

IMO there needs a few generations of batteries to be viable I think for full on M cars. I think the non full M cars are likely, and are already, taking up the electric challenge to convert current buyers, and pull in new buyers.

The short sloping rear end reminds me of the Mazda 121 silhouette. If BMW added 10-20cm more length on the rear, it will looks good though.

Do we know if the next-gen 5er will be offered with a hatch?
With the rear end being so stubby, you could make the conclusion that it could potentially feature a hatch, à la 6er GT

The M5 already weighs a tonne. there is a difference between a hybrid and a full on EV in terms of sound. The car will still use gasoline and emit smoke through an exhaust you do realise? It's not ideal but with the constraints manufacturers are getting on emissions this is not the worst compromise |

Mild hybrids are great tbh, they sort out(kinda) turbo lag, add some additional power, and you still keep that "feel" of a car, what's not to like... Super fast EV's are a one trick pony and we all know it, after accelerating 50-100 times in it, it gets boring, when you add to that the fact that everything else about them is already boring and dead... you soon understand that they have nothing to offer for a car enthusiast. |

I hate to burst anyone's bubble, but if you're getting your hopes up for all these interim hybrid models before the switch to full electric, I really don't think it's going to happen. Engineering, development cost and manufacturing are significantly more expensive and more complicated for hybrid vehicles. Unless there is a guarantee that the vehicle will sell in large volumes, companies won't make enough on each vehicle compared to a purely EV or ICE car to justify the significant investments made up front. Not saying it's impossible, but highly unlikely.

The M3 isn't offered because the standard wagon is not either and BMW won't submit to the crash testing requirements. The next 5 is planned for US in touring form. Possibly the key factor is the current RS6 sales statistics coupled with the lack of future V8 offerings from other manufacturers. |

Plaid contender? or lucid air? wonder if there is a full electric contender also in the works. Would make sense seeing the popularity and trajectory of electric..

A bunch of the X3/X5 have an onboard hybrid that boosts HP by like 50hp; though it appears to be a thinly-veiled excuse to really meet emission laws. Not unreasonable to expect that to occur under the guise of "but it's more HP!".
Two things that I think we (those who want ICE only-M3/4) for awhile longer: > at current HP levels, I just don't see how they could cram enough battery to have a reasonable range > I doubt they'd introduce a hybrid option during an LCI - so for the next few years (?) until the G-gen phases out, I'd think the M3/4 is safe. |

That's a good point about the larger profit margins. For companies that make more affordable cars, it doesn't make sense. Maybe luxury vehicles will be the exception?
