I really don’t think it’s worth the money to replace all four tires. I’m thinking of just buying one tire and shaving down to 8/32”.

Does that sound reasonable?
Sounds reasonable.

Have you checked eBay yet??

You can most likely find the exact same tire (used, but in great condition) with the same amount of wear as your other tires.

You might get lucky and save some $$$$ along the way. 😊

No I haven't. Somehow I don't trust used tires and buying from EBay. The small money savings aren't worth the peace of mind lost when compared to simply buying new but shaved down. Just me, I guess

Here's one that I might buy to replace. Does anybody have any thoughts? I've never bought a used tire online so if anybody sees red flags here please tell me. This is supposedly 8/32:

Good luck!
This is the least expensive option. Tires on the same axle must match in tread depth so the awd computer works properly.

Cmon, stop nickel and diming this issue and buy a legit replacement from tire rack and have them shave the tire for you.

That eBay find is what I would do. Personally, I'd also check the condition myself and compare tire hardness with a durometer so I know it's close to what's on the car now. Could sort of do that by feel and with a fingernail. Date codes which are within a year or so would also suggest to me it's fine from a grip standpoint.

I'd go this route because I feel totally comfortable assessing the current condition of tires- including what I've bought off eBay. Been racing cars since the early nineties and have 20+ spare/race/old tires and wheels in my basement at any given time. If you have any concerns about the used tire or your ability to assess its condition, a new one shaved from tire rack is a low/no risk solution.

Could you clarify? This tire is in California (I'm in Illinois) so how would I determine its "hardness" being so far away? Thanks for your feedback, as I'm sure I sound ignorant.

If this seems too risky then perhaps I should buy new and shaved from TireRack?

You won't be able to check it until after you own it. Before purchasing, my assessment would be based on date codes for the used tire vs what is on the car now. If it's within about a year (maybe 18 months), I'd assume they're pretty similar.

Obviously I'm ok with the small risk of buying used, but there's also a risk of wasting money on that eBay tire if I don't like its condition once I have it. I've yet to be disappointed buying used, but there is a non-zero chance of wasting that money and wanting to go with a shaved new one later.

Edit: I didn't address getting comfortable with any specific eBay seller, but that's part of my mental calculation too.

Another reason you should not get tire from eBay 😊
If you order the tire to tirerack they check car and model for you 😉

I’ve bought several tires from eBay. Look for reputable sellers with lot of sales and high ratings. Never had an issue. I find all highly rated eBay sellers with a good track record are very concerned with accurate descriptions in listings and customer service. Their business depends on it.

Thanks for everyone's advice. I decided to order a new tire from Tire Rack, it'll be shaved to 8/32".

That’s the best solution. 😊👍

Btw…. What did you decide to do about the LCD screen crack? Did you get that sorted out yet?

I'm basically just going to buy a new one and have it installed. There are some deals out there to get somewhat discounted ones. I just haven't gotten around to it yet, since the crack is subtle and has never caused any issue.

Just out of my curiosity how much that LCD costs?

I think this is a tire industry thing scaring you into replacing. I’ve never in my life had issues replacing tires with different tread depths on them.

It’s like saying you have a scratch on your door so you will need to get the entire car painted.
