Using oil filter longer than OE (canister type)?

Was wondering if it would be OK.

The situation: our daily beater 2007 Murano, is 3.5L but only uses 4.75 quarts of oil for oil changes, and the oil filter is really tiny.
I was wondering if I could use a longer filter (given that they are exactly the same diameter, and all the holes match up) for more cleaning power. I always used Mobil 1 oil/filter from the day one, but still am skeptical about how economical Nissan is.
Just to compare, our W204 C300 is 3L, and for oil changes you need: 7.5 quarts of oil and oil filter is at least double the size of E90's oil filter.

So yeah, I feel like using higher quality stuff is not enough. Am I being paranoid or is it legitimate concern?
