M8 vs M850i weight savings

Comparing the M8 Competition GC vs the M850i GC, I generally notice that the M8 is about 300 lbs lighter (giver or take) than its M850i counterpart.

I've been looking online but I can't seem to find how those weight savings are achieved. I know that RAS is one difference between both cars, but surely there are other areas where the M8 is saving weight.

Does anybody else know the answer?

I know the M8 Convertible has the “Carbon Core” as part of its door sil logo… I’m not sure if the M850 has the same “Carbon Core” structure? If it doesn’t then I believe that would be the answer (or part of) to your question. 😊

And If it does… Then perhaps the rear wheel steering assembly of the M850 weighs more than not having it on the M8?

And of course it could be any combination of the two. 😊

I believe if you are comparing the M8C against the M850i it will be the roof, four wheel steering, front seats and few other bits like the wheels. All of that stuff will add up.

Likely down to the RAS and seats (but only if the M8C GC has CF buckets). The CF roof is optional on the M850i. Wheels and ceramic may make a difference on the M8C as well.

Active roll bars and the rear steering are the bulk of the weight. Also the rear battery (li-ion vs huge agm). Carbon roof is only like 10lbs if that I read ( unless there's a sunroof).

And the M850's electronic stabilizer bars, as well.

The carbon roof plus carbon exterieur package on my 850 reduces the weight by about 30kg. I didn't think it would make that much of a difference.

You can reduce weight ( 45lbs) by switching to lithium battery but you'll need to check it the specific battery is compatible. I tried Antigravity and it didn't work however it did work on someone's m550.

How did you determine this? Your carbon exterior bits are in place of lightweight abs so how do get over 60lbs delta on an aluminum to carbon roof that is about 3- 4'?

According to BMW website M850 GC weighs 4696 lb while M8 GC weighs 4480 lb so the difference is 216 lb.
The weight difference between M850 Coupe and M8 Coupe is 132 lb (4427 lb vs 4295 lb) and for Convertible is 130 lb (4560 vs 4690).

I believe the majority of this difference is coming from the followings:
Roof: CF roof vs Metal roof
Rear Steering: M8 does not have this feature
Wheels: M8 has tubeless tire but M850 has RFT and I assume M8 has light weight rim.
Seats: M850 has more luxury seats with some additional options such as massaging. M8 has more sporty / lighter weight seats.
Suspensions: M8 has light weight suspension with lots of aluminum parts.

In addition probably the other components like engine, gearbox, differential might have some weight saving on M8

I've torn the car apart. The M8 has more robust suspension parts, more bracing in the under body.

The metal roof..is thin aluminum. Not much weight savings with a small carbon roof, likely 10lbs. It's all the rims, rotors, active sway bars, rear steering.

I do not know your source, but in BMW Technical data sheets (for Europe from 03/2021), the weight difference between M8 and M850i is just 33lbs (GC). (66lbs for Coupe ; 55lbs for Convertible)

In Europe, there are two weights : DIN(100% liquids 90%fuel) and EU (DIN+165lbs for driver and luggage)
So BMWUSA weights are probably with driver.

The rest can among others be explained by different serial or regulatory equipment (exhaust, driver assistance systems etc.). In 2021 for example, the weight of the M8 increased by 33lbs mainly due to new emission regulations (cat's) ....

We also have the real weight in the official papers (including optional equipment). A few examples:
Carbon ceramics : -50.6lbs (confirmed)
Carbon seats : -21lbs (confirmed)
Carbon roof : -13lbs (confirmed)
Heat comfort package : +4.5lbs (estimated)
Driving Assistant Pack Professional : +1lbs (estimated)
Parking Assistant Pack Plus : +2.5lbs (estimated)
Bowers & Wilkins : +6lbs (estimated)
The wheels and tires also have differences in weight...

Based on my data, the max. configuration weight range for the 3 models of the M850i is 225lbs (for the M8, it's only 114lbs).
