Are 20in Gloss black wheels painted or powder coated?

I had some minor cosmetic damage on one of the gloss black wheels on my 2024 M850i. Tried to repair with paint but didn't adhere well.

Brought it to a wheel repair facility that claims that the wheels are powder coated from the factory and they stripped and powder coated the entire wheel.

It came out perfect but I didn't realize the wheels are powder coated from the factory. Actually, I am not thoroughly convinced they are.

Tried confirming with the dealer and BMW Customer Service and they were clueless. Anybody know for certain? Thanks

I'm not sure why you would believe otherwise. Almost all factory wheels I'm aware of are powdercoated.

Powder coating lasts longer and is more durable. Most car manufacturers use it these days. Maybe some of the lower end vehicles still use paint, but higher end vehicles use powder coating.

I’m fairly sure that factory wheels are painted and lacquered - speaking from experience of having several sets of wheels refurbished using power coating, you can tell the difference in the texture of the finish and they are much more durable when they’ve been refurbished.

Thanks everyone for the responses. Yes, the wheels are powder coated. Pardon my ignorance for thinking they were painted.

As I stated when I created this thread, I had very minor cosmetic damage on the rim and didn't want to just touch it up. I brought it to Wheels Doctor in the Miami area and they chemical stripped the entire wheel and re-powder coated. Cost was $200.00 + tax.Attachment 3631868

The results were amazing.
